Description
Gaarulu is a Vocal Doll, a type of artificial being, who appears as a character in PriPara. She was originally one of the many Mini Falulu, small duplicates of the idol Falulu. Unlike the others, Gaarulu grew to human size and developed her own distinct identity and appearance. Her physical traits include sharp eyes and teeth, with gray or grey-blue eyes and hair that is sometimes described as black or purple, often styled into twintails. Her birthday is April 17, making her an Aries.
In terms of personality, Gaarulu initially presents herself as a mischievous and troublesome figure. She is disobedient, prefers to be alone, and shows little interest in listening to others. She also appears to dislike idols, singing, and dancing. This antagonistic behavior is later revealed to be the result of a "Spiny Bug" that she had swallowed, which was the direct source of her bad attitude. Her actions often create problems for those around her, such as when she uses a weather control room to simulate a monster attack in PriPara. Despite her tough exterior, her behavior stems from a place of jealousy; she was envious of others because she believed she could not sing or dance like they could.
Gaarulu's primary motivation shifts dramatically over the course of her story. Her early actions are driven by this jealousy and the influence of the bug inside her. After the bug is expelled when she eats a pickled plum given to her by the idol Sophy, Gaarulu becomes much nicer and feels genuine remorse for her previous actions. Freed from that negative influence, her true motivation emerges: a desire to become an idol. She works hard to achieve this goal, returning to PriPara to make her debut as an idol so her older sister, Falulu, and her friends can watch her perform. She becomes inspired to do her best as a "Kaijū Idol," a monster idol.
Her role in the story is that of a foil and a character who undergoes significant growth. She first appears as an antagonist causing chaos, which drives episodes focused on the main characters trying to understand and help her. As her arc progresses, she becomes a determined aspiring idol. A key moment is her determination to form a team called Gaarmageddon with Aroma and Mikan, despite the risk that, as a Vocal Doll, breaking her Priticket to form the team could corrupt her data and send her into a coma, a fate that once befell her sister Falulu. Her perseverance is highlighted during her debut performance, where she falls multiple times but continues to get back up, an act that inspires Mirei to return to being an idol.
Gaarulu's key relationships are central to her development. Her most important connection is with her older sister, Falulu. Gaarulu felt distant from Falulu and the other Mini Falulu, even refusing to watch her sister perform, which caused Falulu distress. However, Falulu's concern for Gaarulu is a major driver of the search to find her. She also forms a bond with Sophy, who is one of the few characters who can understand her. Sophy protects Gaarulu from debris during a monster attack and collapses from fatigue, leading Gaarulu to show care and try to help her in return. Her manager in PriPara is a character named Neko.
Her notable abilities include those typical of an idol in the PriPara universe. As a Lovely-type idol, she performs songs and dances. Her preferred brand is Marionette Mu. A significant achievement is her ability to gain a Cyalume Charm, a mark of an idol's success. During her debut, she obtained the pink lovely Cyalume Charm with golden wings after a performance where she demonstrated great resilience. Later, after forming her team, she is sent to the Divine Idol Stage to receive a super Cyalume Coord. Her growth from a creature of negativity to a persistent and inspiring performer stands as her most remarkable development.
