ONA
Description
Metsudō Katahara appears as the long-standing chairman of the Kengan Association and the director of Dainippon Bank in the world of Kengan Ashura. His background is marked by an extraordinary and violent history. Born early in the twentieth century, he served as a kamikaze pilot for the Imperial Japanese Army during the Second World War. He carried out a suicide attack against an enemy warship but miraculously survived the crash. This near-death experience convinced him that he possessed an unusual degree of good fortune, and he decided to test the limits of his luck in the high-stakes world of the Kengan matches. After the war, he built Dainippon Bank from the ruins of post-war Japan and joined the Kengan Association, eventually rising to become its fifty-eighth chairman, a position he held for over fifty years.

Personality-wise, Katahara is a study in contrasts. He is often described as a wily and cunning old man who treats the world as a chessboard and the fighters around him as pieces in his schemes. He is exceedingly confident, jovial, and enjoys chaos and high-stakes gambling, finding the ambition of those who challenge him deeply amusing. Despite his frail and elderly appearance, he projects an immense, almost intimidating presence that can unsettle even the most hardened fighters. At the same time, he displays a paternal side: he is known for his fondness for beautiful women and has fathered multiple children with various mistresses, including his daughter Sayaka and son Retsudo, both of whom he genuinely cares for. He also shows a particular affection for the fighters he personally develops, such as the fifth Fang of Metsudo, Kanoh Agito, whom he treats almost like a son.

Katahara's primary motivation is not wealth or power for their own sake, but a deep-seated need to combat boredom. Having reached the apex of the Kengan world, he finds that few dare to challenge him, and he actively seeks out unpredictability and ambition in others. He organizes the Kengan Annihilation Tournament not merely to find a successor but to revel in the thrill of ultimate clashes and to see how far the ambition of challengers like Hideki Nogi will carry them. His philosophy is that fighters are tools to be used for the entertainment and advancement of the association, a view he expresses with cold realism.

In the story, Katahara serves as the ultimate authority figure and the primary rival to the ambitious Hideki Nogi. He oversees the Kengan Annihilation Tournament from his floating headquarters, watching the battles with detached glee. His role is that of the final gatekeeper: anyone who wishes to reshape the Kengan Association must first overcome the system he has built. He rarely intervenes directly, instead allowing his elite forces to maintain order.

Katahara's most significant relationship is with Erioh Kure, the former head of the Kure clan. Erioh became the first Fang of Metsudo, and the two share a deep, decades-long friendship forged through countless battles and hardships. They have a brotherly bond, and Katahara even consulted Erioh on personal matters such as gifts for his children. He also has a complex relationship with his fighter Kanoh Agito, whom he raised and trained from childhood. After Agito's defeat by Kuroki Gensai, Katahara shows a rare, forgiving side, revealing that it was he who invited Kuroki to the tournament to test Agito. His relationship with his children, Sayaka and Retsudo, is one of genuine affection, with Retsudo aspiring to inherit his father's corporate empire. Over the course of Kengan Ashura, Katahara's development is less about personal change and more about the revelation of his depth. He begins as a seemingly distant puppet master but is later shown to be a man who has weathered storms, values loyalty, and accepts the passing of the torch. By the events of the sequel series Kengan Omega, he has stepped down as chairman, acting as an advisor and dealing with the resurgence of the Worm organization he once helped cripple.

Notable abilities include his extraordinary leadership and organizational skills, which have allowed him to maintain control over the Kengan Association for half a century. He commands an immense private army known as the Bodyguards, consisting of over a thousand highly trained soldiers. The spearhead of this force is the Fang of Metsudo, a title given to the strongest among his Bodyguards, representing the pinnacle of martial skill within the association. While Katahara himself is not a fighter in his advanced age, his willpower, intellect, and sheer presence are formidable weapons, capable of intimidating even elite fighters with nothing more than a look and a few words. His true strength lies in his ability to create, maintain, and exploit systems of power and violence.
