Description
Aiko Mutō is a student at Toumei High School and a classmate of both Yamato Kurosawa and Mei Tachibana. Physically, she is a tall girl with a slim, athletic figure, sleek auburn-brown hair that falls to her mid-back, and dark brown eyes. She is known for wearing five earrings: two red studs on her right ear and three silver hoops on her left. Her current appearance is the result of a dramatic physical transformation; she previously had a heavier build, noticeable acne, and curly hair.

Aiko's personality is characterized by being brash, straightforward, and outspoken, with a tendency to speak her mind without hesitation. Despite her tough and sometimes harsh exterior, she possesses a kind and caring nature, particularly towards those she considers friends. She is also fiercely protective and will confront anyone she believes is hurting someone she cares about.

Her motivations and past are deeply intertwined with her feelings for Yamato Kurosawa. In the past, Aiko had a boyfriend who cheated on her, and during this vulnerable time, she sought comfort from Yamato. When Yamato told her she was beautiful without any makeup, he became the first person to see and appreciate her natural self, causing her to fall in love with him. In a moment of desperation, she asked him to sleep with her, an encounter that solidified her attachment to him. After this, she lost approximately 17 kilograms, or 40 pounds, in just two months, driven by a desire to become beautiful for Yamato. However, this rapid weight loss left her with stretch marks on her stomach, which remain a significant source of insecurity and shame for her.

In the story, Aiko initially serves as a rival to the protagonist, Mei Tachibana, due to her long-standing love for Yamato. She is openly jealous of Mei's relationship with him and doubts the depth of Mei's feelings, believing herself to be more deserving. Her role evolves as she comes to respect Mei after seeing that Mei's love for Yamato is genuine. A key turning point occurs when Mei defends Aiko against a classmate who bullies her about her past, leading Aiko to begin accepting Mei as a friend. After confessing her feelings to Yamato and being gently rejected, she finds peace and becomes a supportive friend to both him and Mei.

Key relationships define much of her development. Her relationship with Masashi Tachikawa is particularly significant. Masashi liked Aiko even when she was chubby, and he accepts her unconditionally, including the stretch marks she is so insecure about. He is the only person with whom she feels completely at ease, able to reveal her true self without hiding her body. Her friendship with Asami Oikawa is also notable, as she defends Asami loyally when others mistreat her.

Aiko undergoes considerable development throughout the series, transitioning from a jealous and insecure antagonist to a loyal and supportive friend. Her personal journey involves overcoming her unrequited love for Yamato, learning to accept herself, and finding a healthy romantic relationship with Masashi, who values her for who she truly is. While she has no supernatural abilities, her notable traits include her unwavering honesty, her boldness in standing up for herself and others, and her capacity for personal growth and genuine friendship.
