Description
Kanetsugu Gasou is a secondary character who plays a significant role in the story. She is a daughter of the Gasou family, which was once wealthy but has since fallen into poverty. Despite her family's current circumstances, she is presented as the seventeenth head of the Gasou family.
Physically, Kanetsugu is a girl of below-average height with a somewhat stout or round figure, including rounded cheeks and midsection, which she shares in common with the protagonist Masamune Makabe during his childhood. She has black hair and, while impersonating a boy, uses bandages and loose clothing to hide her feminine figure. After her true identity is revealed, she later adopts the girls' school uniform and changes her hairstyle.
Her personality is defined by her cunning and deceitfulness. A primary example of this is her faking of a male gender to carry out her scheme. She is highly ambitious and is willing to go to great lengths to achieve her goals, showing a notable indifference to the feelings of most others, such as Aki Adagaki and the real Masamune. However, this indifference does not extend to her own family, particularly her younger sister, Sumire Gasou, for whom she is determined to provide care and financial support.
Kanetsugu's core motivation is to secure funding for her ailing younger sister and their home. To do this, she concocts a plan to impersonate the "Masamune" from Aki Adagaki's childhood, knowing that Aki still holds deep feelings for this person from her past. She uses this deception to become Aki's fiance and gain financial support from the wealthy Adagaki family, essentially conning them while being fully aware of her actions. In pursuit of this, she also blackmails Yoshino Koiwai, having discovered the secret alliance between Yoshino and Masamune.
In the story, Kanetsugu first appears when she approaches Aki in a park, calling out to her and claiming to be the childhood Masamune who has finally returned. Aki, vulnerable and remembering her past love, accepts this claim without hesitation. From that point on, Kanetsugu integrates herself into Aki's life, gaining the trust and unwavering support of the student council, who view her as a kind and innocent suitor. She deliberately sows distrust toward the real Masamune, making him appear to be the one with indecent intentions. Her role is that of a direct rival to Masamune, acting as a major obstacle to his revenge plan as she uses her false identity to get closer to Aki.
Her key relationships are central to the plot. She has a close and caring bond with her younger sister, Sumire, who is the primary motivation for her actions. With Aki Adagaki, Kanetsugu maintains a deceptive but seemingly gentle relationship, taking her on dates and acting as a source of comfort, all while playing with Aki's genuine feelings. In contrast, she is a direct rival to Masamune Makabe, who she deceives and attempts to discredit. She also has a manipulative relationship with Yoshino Koiwai, whom she threatens to ensure cooperation.
Kanetsugu undergoes a notable development following her defeat. Her deception is ultimately exposed at an amusement park when the real Masamune confronts her. After a physical altercation, Aki notices Kanetsugu's feminine features, revealing her true gender as a girl. Kanetsugu then flees the scene. In the aftermath, she sells the Gasou mansion, returns the money she received from the Adagaki family, and begins a new, more honest life. With consideration from the school, she starts working a part-time job selling bread in the school cafeteria and moves into an apartment, looking forward to the day her sister can be discharged from the hospital and live with her. In this new phase, she appears content and even jokes with Masamune, telling him to take responsibility and marry her, which flusters him.
While she does not possess any combat or supernatural abilities, her notable skill lies in her capacity for manipulation and deception. She is a convincing liar, able to craft a persona, manipulate social situations to gain allies, and use information as leverage against others. Additionally, a minor but shared trait with Masamune is that she is extremely scared of bugs.
