Description
Hiyori Kotobuki is a central figure in the story, initially appearing as the ghost of a girl who died in an accident near a pedestrian bridge while harboring deep regret over unresolved romantic feelings for a boy named Yuya Kanzaki. She is trapped between the mortal realm and the afterlife, unable to move on because of her lingering affection for Yuya. Her spirit lacks a physical form, forcing her to possess the body of Mitsuki Kanzaki, Yuya's new stepsister, to stay close to him. This supernatural attachment manifests physically, causing a magical chastity belt, known as a TST, to appear on Mitsuki's body. The belt features a heart-shaped gauge that fills up through romantic or intimate interactions with Yuya; as the gauge fills, Hiyori can build mystical stairways that she believes will allow her to ascend to heaven. Stagnation or negative events cause the gauge to empty, which would doom both her and Mitsuki to fall into hell.
Hiyori's personality stands in stark contrast to Mitsuki's introverted and reserved nature. She is characterized as cheerful, bold, lively, and aggressively flirtatious, particularly when Yuya is involved. When she takes control of Mitsuki's body, her behavior changes dramatically, leading Yuya and others to initially suspect Mitsuki has a split personality. She is single-minded in her pursuit of Yuya, using her possession of Mitsuki to orchestrate provocative situations, from spontaneous kisses to more explicit advances, often ignoring Mitsuki’s frantic protests and the boundaries of social convention. This persistence is fueled by a form of amnesia where her fragmented memories have erased nearly all recollections of her past life except for her powerful affection for Yuya. Despite her often manipulative and troublesome actions, she occasionally reveals glimpses of vulnerability, suggesting inner turmoil beneath her aggressive exterior.
Throughout the story, Hiyori’s primary motivation is to achieve her ascension to heaven by filling the chastity belt’s gauge, which compels her actions and drives much of the comedic and erotic conflict. Her role is that of a catalyst, forcing the shy and reluctant Mitsuki into situations that gradually break down her emotional barriers. Hiyori's interference inadvertently spurs Mitsuki's emotional evolution, pushing her to confront her own hidden feelings for her new stepbrother. Hiyori’s key relationships are defined by this dynamic. Her relationship with Mitsuki is a symbiotic and contentious coexistence, as they share a body and their emotions begin to intertwine, blurring the lines between Hiyori’s obsession and Mitsuki’s own yearnings. Her relentless focus on Yuya is her defining link to the living world. She also displays intense jealousy and hostility towards Yukina Kiritani, Yuya’s childhood friend, whom she sees as a rival and frequently mocks for her figure.
A significant development occurs later in the narrative, which re-contextualizes Hiyori's entire existence. It is revealed that she is not a ghost of a deceased person at all, but an "ikiryō" — a living spirit projected by a girl who is actually in a coma after being hit by a car when she returned to town hoping to see Yuya. Her given name, Hiyori Kotobuki, is revealed to be a pseudonym she took from the author of a beloved children's book, and her real identity is that of a childhood friend of both Yuya and Mitsuki. Her ultimate goal was never to ascend to heaven, but to fill the gauge so the stairs would lead her back to her own comatose body, allowing her to wake up. In the end, she successfully returns to her own body and in a new school year, she approaches the Kanzaki siblings with a smile and asks to be their friend. In terms of abilities, Hiyori possesses the power to possess Mitsuki, swap control of their shared body, and manifest the supernatural chastity belt. Her most notable ability is persistence and a lack of inhibition that drives the plot forward. Physically, she has a signature appearance with short, wavy orange hair, red eyes, and is often depicted with wing motifs on her clothing.
