TV-Series
Description
Mei-Yu Wang is a student in Class 1-D at Tokyo Metropolitan Advanced Nurturing High School. She is an international student from China who moved to Japan with her family during junior high school, which is the primary reason she was placed in Class D, as the school assessed her as having a withdrawn personality due to her initial lack of Japanese communication skills. By the time she enters high school, she has completely mastered the Japanese language, becoming fluent alongside her native Chinese and excellent English. Due to her long name, her close friends affectionately call her Mii-chan. Her birthday is August 21.
Personality-wise, Mei-Yu is characterized as a gentle, shy, and modest individual. She is soft-spoken and struggles significantly when interacting with boys, becoming nervous and self-conscious. However, she relaxes more within her close-knit circle of female friends, particularly with Kikyo Kushida, where she is able to show a warmer and more expressive side. Despite her shyness, she is a caring classmate who shows concern for others, especially when they are in distress. She is not a leader but rather a quiet, behind-the-scenes supporter who values cooperation and avoids unnecessary conflict.
Mei-Yu's primary motivation throughout the story is her romantic feelings for her classmate, Yosuke Hirata. She fell in love with him shortly after the entrance ceremony at the start of the school year. For a long time, her feelings remained an unrequited secret, especially as Hirata was in a public, albeit fake, relationship with Kei Karuizawa. After that relationship ends, she begins to take proactive steps, seeking advice on how to confess to him. Her affection for Hirata is deep and selfless; when he falls into a state of depression and isolates himself from the class, she is the only student who persistently tries to reach out to him, enduring his verbal abuse and a near-physical altercation without giving up on him.
In the larger story of her class, Mei-Yu plays a supportive role, contributing primarily through her strong academic performance rather than through strategy or leadership. She is recognized by the school's evaluation system for her reliability and cooperative nature. Her role is that of a diligent and steady student whose consistent efforts help raise the class's overall level without drawing attention to herself.
Her key relationships include her friendship with Kikyo Kushida, who is the one who gave her the nickname Mii-chan, and this group provides her with a safe social circle. She shares a notable relationship with Kiyotaka Ayanokoji, whom she approaches for advice on love. She tells him that Hirata recommended Ayanokoji as the most reliable and level-headed person in the class, and through their conversation, she realizes he is not as scary as she initially imagined. During the training camp exam, she is in the same group as Shiina Hiyori and Ichinose Honami, forming friendships with them as well.
Throughout the series, Mei-Yu shows subtle but significant development. She begins as a completely passive character, too shy to act on her feelings for Hirata. Over time, she builds the courage to seek advice and to be the first person to speak to Hirata after his emotional breakdown, demonstrating a new level of bravery and resolve. Her loyalty and persistence ultimately lead to a reconciliation between Hirata and the rest of the class.
Her notable abilities lie almost entirely in academics. She is an exceptional student, particularly excelling in English, having once scored a perfect 100 on an exam and ranking first in the subject. Her academic ability is rated A, putting her on par with top students like Teruhiko Yukimura. In contrast, her physical abilities are rated C, indicating she is weak and not athletic. Her overall evaluation in her second year is a B-, with a high Social Contribution score of B+ reflecting her cooperative and considerate nature.
