Description
Fitz is the public identity adopted by Sylphiette, a young elf mage and childhood friend of the protagonist Rudeus Greyrat, following the catastrophic Fittoa Region Teleportation Incident. After being violently swept up in the mana storm and deposited in the Asura Kingdom, Sylphiette accidentally saved the life of Princess Ariel Anemoi Asura from a magical beast. In gratitude, and to provide herself with protection after being displaced from her destroyed homeland, she accepted Ariel's coerced offer to become a royal bodyguard. To serve as a knight in a kingdom that traditionally prohibits women from holding such positions, she adopted the male alias Fitz and began disguising her gender. Her hair, which was originally green, turned white due to the immense magical exertion she suffered during the incident, becoming a permanent physical change that further distinguishes her new persona. She is frequently referred to as Silent Fitz because of her reserved nature and tendency to speak only when necessary in public settings.
In terms of personality, Fitz is defined by a deep sense of loyalty, quiet determination, and a hidden well of insecurity. While she presents a calm and capable exterior as a royal bodyguard, this demeanor masks her true feelings, especially regarding her past. She is fiercely devoted to Princess Ariel, whose life she saved, and later becomes equally devoted to Rudeus when she reunites with him at the Ranoa University of Magic. Despite her abilities, she often feels anxious and struggles with low self-esteem, particularly concerning whether Rudeus remembers her or still cares for her after years of separation. This fear causes her to hide her true identity from him even when they become close friends at the university, leading to significant internal conflict as she watches him interact with others, feeling jealous and sad that he does not recognize her. She can also display a fierce and protective anger, as seen when she instinctively confronts a character she believes is responsible for the teleportation incident that ruined her and Rudeus’s lives.
Fitz’s primary motivation throughout the story is to reclaim the connection she lost. After the teleportation incident destroyed her home village and scattered her loved ones, her main driving force becomes a desire for safety and belonging. Initially, this means accepting Ariel’s protection and serving her as a means of survival. However, once she enrolls at the magic university and discovers that Rudeus is also a student, her motivation shifts entirely toward rekindling their childhood bond. She is paralyzed by the fear that he will not remember her or that she will be rejected, so she instead focuses on simply being near him, using her position to observe and support him from a distance. Her ultimate goal is to finally reveal herself to him and be accepted, hoping to build a future together that was stolen from them by the disaster.
Within the narrative, Fitz serves a crucial dual role. Firstly, she is the loyal guardian and confidante of Princess Ariel, acting as the princess’s sword and shield in the dangerous political landscape of the Asura Kingdom while Ariel vies for the throne. Her skills as a mage are essential to Ariel’s survival against numerous assassination attempts. Secondly, her enrollment at Ranoa University of Magic brings her into direct contact with the main protagonist, Rudeus. Her presence there, and her secret identity, becomes the central emotional arc of the second season. She acts as a source of stability and healing for Rudeus, who is suffering from severe psychological trauma and erectile dysfunction. Without her knowledge, Fitz becomes the key to Rudeus’s recovery, as his growing feelings for her, despite believing she is a man, eventually help him overcome his impotence. Her position also facilitates key plot developments, such as when she suggests Rudeus seek out the mysterious Silent Sevenstars, leading to a major revelation about the cause of the teleport incident.
Key relationships define her character. Her relationship with Princess Ariel is complex, beginning as a coerced arrangement but blossoming into a genuine friendship. Ariel provides Fitz with a home, a purpose, and political protection, while Fitz provides unwavering loyalty and friendship in return, often sleeping in Ariel’s room for comfort and safety. Her dynamic with Luke, Ariel’s other bodyguard, is that of a coworker and fellow protector. She shares a profound and foundational relationship with Rudeus Greyrat, whom she has loved since childhood. Their interactions at the university are marked by dramatic irony, as Rudeus treats her as a male friend and classmate named Fitz, unaware that she is the girl he grew up with. This relationship is the core of her personal story, driven by her longing to be recognized and her fear of revealing the truth.
Fitz undergoes significant development from a displaced, traumatized victim into a proactive agent of her own happiness. At the start of her journey, she is essentially a passive survivor, accepting Ariel’s terms because she has no other options. As she settles into her role as a bodyguard, she gains confidence and skill. Her stagnation occurs at the university, where her fear of rejection traps her in the Fitz persona, causing her great emotional pain. Her development culminates in a decisive act of courage: she orchestrates a situation in a secluded cave where Rudeus is forced to remove her wet clothes, finally revealing her body and her true identity to him. This act of vulnerability shatters her protective disguise and allows her to move past her fear, leading to the reunion she had desperately wanted. By confessing her long-held love for him, she reclaims her past and chooses her future, transforming from a silent guardian into a partner.
As a mage, Fitz possesses notable magical abilities, with a particular affinity for healing and wind magic. She is highly skilled and capable, as demonstrated when she single-handedly defeated a Terminate Boar that had already killed a member of the royal guard. She is adept at spellcasting and uses her magic for both combat and defensive purposes. Her signature trait as a bodyguard is her silent and efficient method of operating, which is effective for protecting her charge in a politically hostile environment. Her greatest assets, however, are not just her magical talents but her emotional intelligence, patience, and deep, unwavering loyalty to those she loves. These personal qualities ultimately prove more significant than her magical power in resolving her central conflict and achieving her goals.
