Description
Aki Inoue, whose full name is Akiko Inoue, is a central character in the narrative. She is a third-year student at Yukishina Junior High School who comes from the year 1991, making her one of the older children invited to the mysterious castle. Physically, she is an adolescent girl with brown eyes and shoulder-length brown hair. She typically wears her hair in a ponytail and favors a style that includes a shortened skirt and loose socks, which are characteristic of the gyaru girl fashion trend from the early 1990s.

Outwardly, Aki presents herself as a laid-back, cheerful, and extroverted individual who takes on a natural leadership role among the group. She acts as a cool big sister figure, especially to the younger girls like Kokoro and Fuuka, offering them tea and words of comfort. However, this confident exterior masks a deeply troubled and emotionally fragile interior, making her a classic example of a stepford smiler. Her personality is a direct result of the severe trauma and neglect she suffers in her personal life.

Aki's background is marked by profound instability and pain. Her father left the family when she was young, and her mother is neglectful, showing little interest in Aki in favor of spending time with her new husband. This stepfather is a source of great fear for Aki, as she is forced to hide from him when they are alone, implying a history of suspicious behavior. This fear is tragically confirmed when, after her grandmother's funeral, her stepfather, drunk, attempts to sexually assault her. Her grandmother was her only refuge and source of unconditional love, secretly giving her money and supporting her choices, such as dyeing her hair. The loss of her grandmother removes Aki's last safe space and pushes her toward a complete emotional collapse. In addition to her horrific home life, Aki is also ostracized at school. She was once the best player on the volleyball club, but her aggressive and toxic attitude toward younger members led to her being labeled a bully and forced to leave the team. She also reveals she is dating a college student, an age-gap romance she met through a telephone dating service.

Aki's motivations are largely driven by a search for escape and connection, but ultimately, by a deep sense of hopelessness. At first, she finds solace in the castle, using it as a refuge from her unbearable reality. However, as her life continues to deteriorate with her grandmother's death and the subsequent assault, her motivation shifts from seeking sanctuary to seeking an end to her suffering. Believing she has nowhere left to turn, she makes the deliberate choice to break the castle's most important rule by staying past the 5:00 PM curfew, intending to be "eaten" by the wolf, an act of self-destruction.

In the story, Aki serves as both a charismatic leader and a cautionary figure. Her initial warmth and confidence help to build the close-knit community within the castle, particularly bonding with Kokoro and Fuuka. However, her desperate act of breaking the rules has devastating consequences for the entire group, leading to them all being consumed by the wolf. This event becomes the central crisis that the protagonist, Kokoro, must resolve. Aki's most crucial relationship is with Kokoro. Despite Aki's seniority and Kokoro's initial respect for her as a "senpai," a deep friendship forms between them. This bond is so powerful that Kokoro uses her one wish to save Aki and reverse the destruction her actions caused. Another key relationship is with her grandmother, whose love provided Aki's only moments of happiness. In the end, it is revealed that Aki's future self becomes a kind school counselor named Mrs. Kitajima, who dedicates her life to helping children who face the same kinds of struggles she endured.

Throughout the narrative, Aki undergoes a tragic but ultimately redemptive arc. She transforms from a seemingly put-together leader to a girl broken by trauma, and then, through the intervention of a friend, is given a second chance. This second chance leads to her most significant development: growing up to become a compassionate counselor. While she possesses no supernatural abilities, her natural charisma and leadership skills are notable, as is her resilience in eventually channeling her profound pain into empathy and a profession dedicated to saving others.
