Description
Akaza is a significant antagonist who holds the position of Upper Rank Three among the Twelve Kizuki, the elite demons serving under the progenitor Muzan Kibutsuji. In the Swordsmith Village Arc, his role is largely confined to a single scene, but it is one that firmly establishes his personality and his relationships with his fellow Upper Ranks.

Before becoming a demon, Akaza was a human named Hakuji. His early life was marked by immense hardship and tragedy. Born into poverty, he resorted to theft to afford medicine for his sickly father, earning him criminal tattoos and the scorn of others. After his father committed suicide out of guilt, a devastated and enraged Hakuji was banished from his hometown. He eventually found a new purpose when he was taken in by Keizo, the master of a martial arts dojo, and fell in love with Keizo's daughter, Koyuki. Hakuji vowed to protect them both, but this happiness was shattered when a rival dojo poisoned the well, killing Keizo and Koyuki. In a fit of grief-stricken rage, Hakuji murdered the rival dojo's sixty-seven members with his bare hands. This act of extraordinary violence drew the attention of Muzan, who offered him the chance to become a demon. With nothing left to live for, Hakuji accepted, losing his memories and being reborn as Akaza.

As a demon, Akaza is a stubborn, harsh, and bloodthirsty fighter who lives for battle. He has an obsessive desire to fight strong opponents, believing that power and eternal strength are the only things of value. He holds immense disdain for those he considers weak, whom he views with contempt. This philosophy is a twisted echo of his buried human desire to protect his loved ones by becoming stronger. Despite his cruelty, Akaza adheres to a unique personal code: he refuses to kill or eat women. This rule, for which he received special permission from Muzan, is a subconscious remnant of his love and unfulfilled promise to protect Koyuki.

Akaza's role in the Swordsmith Village Arc is brief but impactful. He is summoned by Muzan alongside the other Upper Ranks following the death of Gyutaro, the former Upper Rank Six. During this meeting, his volatile personality is on full display. He shows open hostility toward his colleague Doma, the Upper Rank Two, for whom he harbors a deep-seated resentment, likely due to Doma surpassing him in rank despite becoming a demon long after Akaza. When Doma places a hand on his shoulder in a familiar gesture, Akaza viciously punches him, destroying part of his face. He also displays a tense rivalry with the other Upper Ranks, including Gyokko and Hantengu. In stark contrast to his aggression toward his peers, Akaza is completely deferential to Muzan, kneeling before him and addressing him with respect.

His key relationships are defined by his pursuit of strength and his demonic hierarchy. He is intensely loyal to Muzan, viewing him as his absolute master. He sees his fellow Upper Ranks as rivals rather than allies, with a particularly intense animosity toward Doma. His most notable relationship outside of the demonic circle is with the Flame Hashira, Kyojuro Rengoku, whom he fought and killed prior to the Swordsmith Village Arc. This battle left a lasting impression on Akaza, who respected Rengoku's strength and repeatedly offered to turn him into a demon. The battle also created a deep enmity with Tanjiro Kamado, who witnessed the fight and insulted Akaza, earning the demon's vengeful ire.

Akaza's character development is a slow process of regaining his lost humanity. As a demon, he is driven by a singular, unexplained desire to become stronger. It is only later, during the final battle in the Infinity Castle, that his memories of Hakuji resurface during a fight with Tanjiro and the Water Hashira, Giyu Tomioka. These memories, particularly of his master Keizo and his fiancée Koyuki, cause him to waver. After being beheaded by Tanjiro, Akaza initially resists death to continue fighting as Muzan commands. However, a spiritual apparition of Koyuki appears, thanking him and telling him he has done enough. Overcome with remorse for his actions as a demon, Akaza chooses to stop his own regeneration, committing suicide so he can finally die and reunite with his loved ones in the afterlife.

Akaza is an exceptionally powerful demon, whose abilities are centered on martial arts. His primary technique is Destructive Death, a Blood Demon Art that he channels through his fists and legs to create devastating shockwaves. His most crucial ability is the Compass Needle, a technique that deploys a snowflake-like compass under his feet. This compass allows him to sense the Fighting Spirit of his opponents, enabling him to predict their attacks, track them from his blind spots, and instinctively target their vital points. He combines this sensory power with a variety of offensive techniques, including Air Type, which fires shockwaves from his punches, and Annihilation Type, a powerful lunging punch that generates a massive shockwave. He also possesses immense physical strength, superhuman speed, and rapid regenerative abilities, all of which make him one of the most formidable demons in existence.
