Description
Hantengu holds the position of Upper Rank Four among the Twelve Kizuki, the most powerful demons serving under the demon king Muzan Kibutsuji. He serves as the primary antagonist of the Swordsmith Village story arc. In his primary form, he appears as a short, frail, and elderly figure with a thin, skeletal body, wrinkled skin, a large prominent bump on his forehead, and two small curved horns. His eyes are usually rolled back, showing only the whites, which hides the inscription of his rank. Despite his weak and pitiful appearance, he is an immensely powerful demon whose true danger lies not in brute strength alone but in a deceptive and frustrating fighting style.

The core of Hantengu's personality is an all-consuming cowardice and a deeply twisted victim mentality. He is perpetually scared, paranoid, and delusional, constantly crying, trembling, and insisting that he is a innocent weakling being persecuted by the world around him. This behavior is not a result of becoming a demon but a continuation of his life as a human. In the past, he was a pathological liar and a serial criminal who committed countless thefts and murders across many towns, even killing his own wives and children. At every step, he refused to accept responsibility, instead twisting facts to frame himself as the blameless victim and blaming his own hands for committing the crimes against his will. This self-justifying and hypocritical nature forms the foundation of his identity. His primary motivation is self-preservation at any cost, driven by an intense fear of death and punishment, and he seeks to serve Muzan faithfully, viewing him as the first person who believed in his innocence.

In the story, Hantengu is dispatched by Muzan alongside Upper Rank Five, Gyokko, to obliterate the Swordsmith Village. His role is to engage the Demon Slayers in a chaotic and misleading battle while his partner attacks from other angles. During the conflict, he encounters Tanjiro Kamado, Nezuko Kamado, Muichiro Tokito, and Genya Shinazugawa. The key to his power and his function in the narrative is his unique Blood Demon Art, which manifests his emotions as separate, physical entities. When his main body is threatened, his powerful emotions of anger, joy, sorrow, and pleasure split off to create four distinct demon clones named Sekido, Karaku, Aizetsu, and Urogi. These clones are incredibly strong and each wields unique weapons and abilities, such as generating lightning, creating powerful gales, flying, and using sonic blasts. These clones are essentially disposable decoys; even if decapitated, they do not die but can split further or regenerate, serving only to distract opponents from Hantengu's true form. While these powerful clones fight, Hantengu's real body shrinks down to the size of a small mouse and scurries away to hide, representing his core emotion of fear. This forces the Demon Slayers to change their tactics, with some engaging the seemingly invincible clones while others search for the hidden, vulnerable main body. When the four main clones are pushed to their limit, they can merge into a far more powerful fifth entity called Zohakuten, who represents hatred and wields devastating wood-based attacks, capable of summoning massive wooden dragons.

His relationship with his fellow Upper Rank, Gyokko, is functional enough to carry out their shared mission. However, his most significant relationship is with his master, Muzan Kibutsuji. Hantengu is utterly loyal and obeys every command, viewing Muzan as his savior who rescued him from a wrongful execution. This loyalty is so profound that even as he is dying, his final act is to use his blood link to show Muzan a vision of Nezuko Kamado conquering the sun, an event that sets the final act of the series in motion. Throughout the long battle, Hantengu himself does not undergo a change of heart. He remains a sniveling, self-pitying coward until his true body is finally cornered and beheaded by Tanjiro. Even in his final moments, he expresses no remorse, only terror and a continued sense of his own victimhood, making him one of the few demons for whom Tanjiro feels no sympathy whatsoever.
