Description
Goemon Ishikawa XIII is the thirteenth-generation descendant of the legendary renegade samurai and folk hero Ishikawa Goemon. Created by Monkey Punch, the character was introduced as a deliberate addition to the original Lupin III manga to provide a distinctly Japanese presence among the main cast, balancing the existing characters who lacked a strong Asian cultural identity.
Goemon serves the role of a modern-day rōnin, a masterless samurai who applies the ancient codes of bushido to a world of international heists and advanced technology. He typically dresses in traditional Japanese clothing, including a hakama and a fundoshi loincloth, often wearing his hair long and unevenly cut and sporting a sugegasa conical hat. Despite the contemporary settings of his adventures, he strictly adheres to Japanese cultural practices, consuming only Japanese cuisine to the point of fasting when it is unavailable, and favoring sake as his drink of choice. His calm and stoic demeanor forms the core of his personality. He is a man of immense discipline, frequently found in a state of deep meditation regardless of the chaos or danger unfolding around him. While typically mellow and aloof, Goemon possesses a strong sense of pride in his abilities, and experiences profound shame or frustration when he fails or succumbs to a personal weakness, often leaving the group to undergo further training or meditation.
The character's motivations are rooted in the pursuit of martial and spiritual perfection. Unlike his companions who are primarily driven by material wealth or global notoriety, Goemon seeks worthy challenges for his sword and opportunities to uphold honor. He maintains a strict moral code, generally preferring to incapacitate rather than kill his opponents, which is a source of his most famous catchphrase, "I have cut yet another worthless object," uttered whenever he uses his legendary blade to destroy mundane items like cars, buildings, or weapons. He is deeply dedicated to the warrior's path and views his allegiance to Lupin as a means to observe, learn, and test his skills in a world of constant danger.
Within the story, Goemon is a core member of Lupin's gang, though his participation is often on a "when-interested basis," making him an independent ally rather than a constant follower. His role in the group is typically that of a heavy hitter and the ultimate escape tool, using his sword to cut through any physical obstacle, from steel vaults and collapsing buildings to hails of gunfire, which he can deflect with superhuman speed. His narrative role often involves being the last line of defense or the crucial element of surprise in a heist.
The dynamics with other characters are central to his development. His initial relationship with Arsène Lupin III was that of a bitter enemy; originally hired to assassinate Lupin, Goemon eventually realized he could learn more by working alongside him than against him, switching his allegiance. Over time, this has evolved into a deep and implicit trust. While Goemon is easily annoyed by Lupin's frivolous antics, especially his obsessive womanizing, he harbors a profound respect for the thief's skills and has on multiple occasions proven his loyalty, refusing to betray Lupin even under extreme torture. He has even vowed that if he is to take a life with his sword, it will be Lupin's as his final act. His relationship with Daisuke Jigen is much more amicable, built on mutual respect as fellow warriors and professionals. They often function as a team within the team, working together to keep Lupin out of trouble while sharing a tacit understanding and trust. In contrast, his history with Fujiko Mine is fraught with betrayal. She was initially his girlfriend but blew his cover to Lupin, leading to a lasting distrust. While he will occasionally cooperate with her if their goals align, he generally views her as a disruptive and untrustworthy influence.
Goemon's character has shown development across various series adaptations, moving from a ruthless enemy to a loyal, if reluctant, ally. He has faced numerous personal trials, such as the breaking of his prized sword, which forces him into deep introspection and training. He has also encountered multiple love interests, though his strict adherence to the samurai code, fear of distraction from his training, and general awkwardness with women have prevented any lasting romantic entanglements. His development often centers on reconciling his ancient warrior's code with the complexities of the modern and morally ambiguous world he inhabits alongside Lupin.
Notable abilities define Goemon's character. He is an extraordinary master of several martial arts, including Kenjutsu and Iaidō, as well as unarmed disciplines like Karate and Jujutsu. However, he is most famous for his possession of the Zantetsuken, or "Iron-Cutting Sword," a blade of near-mythical sharpness capable of slicing through virtually any physical substance. This includes not only steel and stone but also bullets, vehicles, aircraft, and even, in surreal moments, lightning or the fabric of his own animated universe. His mastery is such that he can perform these feats with blinding speed and precision, often cutting an object or an opponent's clothing without inflicting injury. Despite the sword's might, it has notable limitations, including an inability to cut a yam-based gel called konjac, which adheres to the blade. Beyond swordsmanship, Goemon possesses superhuman physical attributes, including immense wrist strength to wield his heavy blade, incredible agility and fleetness of foot allowing him to outrun vehicles or balance on ropes, and exceptional dynamic vision and intuition, which he has honed to the point of a reliable "sixth sense".
