Description
Fujiko Mine is a professional criminal, burglar, confidence trickster, and spy who operates both alongside and in opposition to the master thief Lupin III. She was created by Monkey Punch to add a female presence to the Lupin III series, with her name inspired by a picture of Mount Fuji. Originally conceived to fulfill a Bond girl role, she evolved into a single character who changes her style frequently.
As a femme fatale, Fujiko is extremely intelligent, crafty, and willing to use her feminine charms and attractiveness to fool her targets and get what she wants from any man. Her primary motivation is self-interest, as she exclusively works to serve her own goals, which usually involve acquiring treasure and riches. She serves as Lupin's on-and-off love interest and rival, with her principal tactic being to stick with Lupin and his associates until the plunder is available, then double-cross them to claim the loot for herself. Lupin is completely infatuated with her and will do anything for her, and he is surprisingly forgiving of her two-faced nature, even stating on occasion that he looks forward to her betrayals. While Fujiko is aware of this and uses it to her advantage, she never gets Lupin into trouble from which he cannot escape. Although she rarely wishes to fully reveal her affection, Fujiko does have love for Lupin and grieves on occasions when he appears to have died, considering him the most important person to her.
Her key relationships with other members of the cast are complex. Daisuke Jigen despises Fujiko and sees her showing up as a sign of rough times ahead, though for Lupin's sake he will come to her defense in desperate moments, viewing her at best as an annoying sister. Goemon Ishikawa XIII, who had a brief romance with her, has been known to work on capers with her independent of the other gang members but can be equally distrustful of her when he thinks she is manipulating Lupin. She also routinely makes deals with Inspector Koichi Zenigata, providing law enforcement with information and assistance in order to gain her own freedom.
Throughout the franchise's long history, Fujiko's character has seen notable development while retaining her core traits. Later installments tend to depict her as more loyal to the gang, though her tendency to double-cross when necessary remains largely intact. The 2012 anime series, The Woman Called Fujiko Mine, made her the protagonist for the first time, exploring her backstory and motivations more deeply. Her background includes hints of organized crime ties, including a past partnership with a notorious killer known as Pun, and she sometimes claims to suffer from amnesia about events prior to meeting Lupin. The entire franchise operates on negative continuity, meaning her background has been presented in several different, sometimes conflicting ways across various installments.
Fujiko possesses a wide array of notable abilities. She is an excellent markswoman, with her favorite weapon being a Browning M1910 pistol typically holstered in her garter. She has demonstrated superb martial arts skills capable of rendering an attacker twice her weight unconscious with a single blow. Fujiko is a master of disguise and accents and can speak dozens of foreign languages in addition to her native Japanese. Like other members of Lupin's team, she can pilot virtually any land, sea, or air vehicle, with her personal preference being a conventional Kawasaki motorcycle. She can be very promiscuous when necessary to complete a job and has kissed and even slept with different men for information or to escape a dangerous situation. Fujiko usually dresses in fashionable formal gowns and fine jewelry, while her informal attire typically accentuates her figure. Her favorite pastimes include shopping, attending social functions, dancing, horseback riding, and dating wealthy gentlemen. She enjoys champagne and fine wine and also smokes cigarettes. Fujiko has specific fears, including a fear of frogs and claustrophobia. Like the other main characters, she would never endanger a child.
