Description
Masukami, also referred to as Omasu, is a supporting character in the Rurouni Kenshin series, including its third installment The Legend Ends. She is a member of the Oniwabanshū, the clan of spies and ninja that originally served the shogunate. Masukami helps run the Aoiya, an inn that serves as the Oniwabanshū's base of operations in Kyoto, and she works alongside Kashiwazaki Nenji, known as Okina. Her primary responsibility is serving as the caretaker of Makimachi Misao, the young granddaughter of the previous leader of the Oniwabanshū. Masukami is known for her gentle and kind demeanor, even toward enemies, but within the staff she is regarded as the responsible and level-headed member. She does not hesitate to scold Okina when he becomes drunk and troublesome at gatherings. Her role in the story is largely supportive: she assists in running the inn, looks after Misao, and provides a stable presence for the Oniwabanshū during the turmoil of Shishio's uprising. Masukami does not engage in direct combat or undergo significant personal development; her function is to maintain the household and offer quiet support to the main characters. Her abilities appear to be those of a skilled kunoichi, though her combat feats are not prominently displayed. Her key relationships are with Misao, whom she cares for deeply, and with Okina, whom she helps manage the Aoiya. Through her loyalty and steady nature, Masukami embodies the everyday resilience of the Oniwabanshū as they navigate the conflict between Kenshin and Shishio.
