Description
Augustus, also known as the Wandering Sage, is a central figure in the events surrounding the city of the dead. He is a specter, an undead being with white hair and blue eyes, who was once a human mage of great renown. After his death, Augustus made a contract with Stagnate, the god of undeath, to return as an undead. This pact bound him to a sacred duty: to protect the seal of the High King for centuries. Later, after losing his original contract, he forged a new one with the goddess Gracefeel, becoming something akin to her herald to continue his eternal vigil.

In terms of personality, Augustus is often harsh, rude, and brusque, especially towards his foster grandson, William. He carries himself with the haughty pride of a powerful sorcerer, which frequently overwhelms any sense of humility he might possess, leading him to act like a cantankerous old man. Despite this gruff exterior, he deeply cherishes his friends and family. His true driving motivation is a boundless thirst for knowledge, a pursuit that in the past led him to have little attachment to his own mortal body. He is also fiercely protective of his long-time companions, and his concern for them once compelled him to try and eliminate any potential threat to their existence, a category in which William was initially included.

Augustus serves as one of the three foster parents and primary guardians to the protagonist, William G. Maryblood. He is responsible for raising William alongside a skeletal warrior named Blood and a mummified priestess named Mary. While Blood taught William combat and Mary taught him life skills and empathy, Augustus was the one who instructed him in magic and the arcane arts, helping him unlock his affinity for sorcery. The three undead lived together in a mysterious temple, hiding their true purpose from the boy until he came of age. Augustus shares a particularly complicated relationship with William; he is always rude to the boy, but this behavior masks a genuine affection, and he eventually comes to see William as the grandson he never had.

A key moment in Augustus's development occurs following the defeat of Stagnate. After fulfilling their century-spanning duty, Augustus's companions, Mary and Blood, chose to allow their life forces to be recycled into the normal cycle of death and rebirth. Augustus, however, made a different choice. He accepted an extension to his afterlife contract offered by Gracefeel, choosing to remain in the city of the dead to continue guarding the High King's seal while William ventured out into the wider world.

Augustus possesses notable abilities befitting his title as the Wandering Sage. As a powerful specter and sorcerer, his magical prowess is immense, capable of teaching and shaping a young student into a skilled magic user. His existence itself is tied to divine contracts, first with the god of undeath and later with the goddess of reincarnation, granting him a form of immortality and purpose that transcends a normal human lifespan.
