Description
Chizuru Sakaki is one of the central characters in the narrative, known for her serious and responsible personality. A recurring feature across different timelines is her tendency to hold a position of authority, such as class president or squad leader, and to approach every task with utmost diligence.
Chizuru has long brown hair often styled in twin braids and wears glasses. Her background differs significantly between the peaceful world and the war-torn reality. In the latter, she is the daughter of the Japanese Prime Minister, Sakaki Korechika. Her decision to join the UN Forces was, in part, an act of rebellion against her father, who had used his influence to assign her to the relative safety of Yokohama Base instead of the front lines with the Imperial Japanese Army, where she had originally volunteered to serve.
Personality wise, Chizuru is strict, by-the-book, and highly principled. She holds herself and those around her to a high standard, which often puts her at odds with the more impulsive and rule-bending Ayamine Kei, with whom she has a notably bad relationship. This contrast in their approaches to discipline and combat is a source of friction within the training squad. Despite her stern exterior, her motivations are deeply rooted in a sense of duty and a desire to protect her home country from the BETA threat. Her seriousness also makes her particularly sensitive to failure, and she initially responds with frustration and stress when faced with a squadmate who lacks basic skills.
In the story, Chizuru serves as the squad leader of the training unit that the protagonist joins. She struggles to keep her diverse team cohesive, especially during TSF mock battles where her rigid adherence to protocol clashes with other’s creativity. Her role becomes more pivotal and tragic as the war escalates. A major turning point for her character is the death of her father, the Prime Minister, at the hands of Sagiri Naoya during the 12/5 Incident. Overcome with rage and grief, she charges at him during the ensuing battle but is utterly outmatched and defeated.
Following these events, she joins the elite Special Task Force A-01, the Valkyries, as part of A-Flight in the position of Gun Sweeper. Her key relationships include a close friendship with Suzumiya Akane, and her fervent belief that Akane has died during a BETA attack causes her to once again let her emotions override her judgment, leading her to charge recklessly deep into enemy lines. Outside of combat, she maintains a complex dynamic with her father; even in death, she mourns him and feels she has lost her home.
Chizuru’s development is marked by this recurring struggle between her strict, professional demeanor and her intense, sometimes overwhelming personal emotions. Initially humiliated by her squad’s failure and dismissive of an unskilled newcomer, she eventually grows to respect her comrades and rely on them. However, her greatest character development comes through tragic sacrifice. During Operation Ouka, she and her rival, Kei Ayamine, return to seal an entrance to the BETA hive. Overwhelmed by enemy forces, they make the mutual decision to detonate their S-11 self-destruction devices, sacrificing themselves to complete their objective.
Her notable abilities are grounded in her military training as a TSF pilot. She wears a Fortified Suit for protection and integration with her machine. She is proficient in piloting various Tactical Surface Fighters, including the Type-94 Shiranui and the high-performance Type-00 Takemikazuchi. Her skills extend to hand-to-hand combat, the use of firearms and explosives, equipment repair, and other fundamental soldiering tasks gained from a regimen that includes running ten kilometers daily.
