Description
Kasumi Yashiro is a mysterious young girl who resides in the hidden depths of Yokohama Base, specifically on its nineteenth underground floor. Her uniform distinguishes her from other personnel, bearing the unique identifier ALTERNATIVE IV rather than the standard YOKOHAMA BASE patch, marking her central involvement in that project. She is a product of the earlier Alternative III plan, an artificially created human with extraordinary extrasensory abilities.
Kasumi is generally quiet, timid, and initially gives off an eerie or unsettling presence to those who first meet her. Her behavior can seem inscrutable, as seen when she develops a daily routine of waking the main character, Shirogane Takeru, in the morning. This specific habit, along with other mannerisms, are not originally her own but are copied from the memories of another person, reflecting her deep desire for connection. Being the result of genetic engineering, she has no parents and was created with the sole purpose of acting as a tool for communication with the alien BETA. Her loneliness is profound, and she often feels like an empty vessel, having initially adopted the fragmented memories of others as a substitute for her own experiences. She feels a deep sense of shame about her artificial origins but finds reassurance through Takeru's promise to create happy and unique memories with her in the future.
Her primary motivation revolves around her need for genuine human bonds. She comes to cherish her connections with Takeru and the 00 Unit pilot, Kagami Sumika, as they are the first individuals to treat her as a friend rather than a tool. She sincerely desires Sumika's happiness and for Takeru to understand Sumika's feelings. Kasumi is profoundly loyal, dedicating herself to her duties not out of cold obligation but out of care for those involved.
In the story, Kasumi is an essential figure in the Alternative IV plan. Her most critical function is to serve as the warp anchor for Takeru’s consciousness across parallel worlds, a task that requires her to constantly observe and draw him to maintain a stable memory link, a process that is mentally and physically exhausting for her. She is also the primary interface with the 00 Unit, a brain preserved in a cylinder, and it is through her that the unit's consciousness, Sumika, is able to communicate with the outside world. Despite being unable to pilot a Tactical Surface Fighter, her non-combat support role is irreplaceable for the operation's success.
Kasumi’s key relationships are few but intense. She lives under the care of Dr. Kouzuki Yuuko, a relationship she describes as impersonal, one based on interest and disinterest rather than affection or fear. Her friendship with Takeru is the most significant, as his kindness and promise to make new memories with her helps her overcome her loneliness and shame. Simultaneously, she forms an equally deep, mind-to-mind friendship with Sumika, whose brain she has been communicating with for a long time, making them the closest of confidants. These two are her only friends, and she wishes nothing more than for them to be together.
Throughout the narrative, Kasumi develops from an enigmatic and almost robotic figure into a more emotionally expressive girl. Initially ashamed of her nature, she learns to accept herself and her feelings, eventually even confessing her own love for Takeru under certain circumstances. Her journey is one of self-discovery, moving from an empty existence defined by a mission to a person with her own cherished memories and desires.
Notable Abilities
Kasumi possesses powerful extrasensory perception, allowing her to read the thoughts and memories of others and even project her own thoughts into their minds. She was specifically created to attempt to communicate with the BETA, though this plan never came to fruition. Another unique ability is her capacity to "observe" and anchor a person's existence across different dimensions, a power that is crucial for time-space jumps. To help focus her abilities, she often uses drawing as a form of concentration. Due to her genetic modifications as a sixth-generation artificial esper, her physical aging is halted, keeping her perpetually looking like a young teenager to preserve her powers.
