Description
Miki Tamase, often called Tama by those close to her, is a supporting character in Muv-Luv Alternative. Originally introduced in the earlier Muv-Luv Extra as a cheerful classmate and member of the archery club, she carries many of her core personality traits into the war-torn world of Alternative, though her circumstances are drastically different. She is a member of the 207th Training Unit’s B Squad, training to pilot Tactical Surface Fighters in humanity’s war against the BETA. Physically small and full of energy, she presents herself with a bright, earnest, and sometimes comedic demeanor that can lighten tense moments within her squad.
Her background reveals a strong desire to live up to the expectations of her father, Genjousai Tamase, a high-ranking United Nations Undersecretary. This motivation often drives her actions, occasionally leading her to exaggerate her achievements in letters home to impress him. In one notable episode, she falsely claims to be the flight commander of her squad, which leads to a moment of embarrassment when her father visits and her squadmates must help maintain the ruse. Despite this tendency, she is genuinely hardworking and wishes to prove her worth as a pilot.
In terms of ability, Miki is recognized by everyone around her as an exceptional marksman, specializing in long-range sniping. Her skill with a TSF’s weaponry is notable even among her peers, making her a valuable asset in combat situations. She matures over the course of the story, moving from a lighthearted schoolgirl in the Extra timeline to a capable and determined cadet in the Alternative timeline, all while retaining her characteristic sincerity and warmth.
Her relationships within the cast are defined by camaraderie. She is particularly close to protagonist Takeru Shirogane, who affectionately nicknames her Tama. She also bonds well with the other members of the 207th Training Unit, including Meiya Mitsurugi and Kei Ayamine, often serving as a source of good humor and support within the group. While she does not hold a central role in the main plot, her presence highlights the human side of the military struggle, balancing moments of levity with the growing seriousness of the war. Her development is subtle but present, as she learns to reconcile her desire for her father’s approval with her own honest efforts as a soldier.
