Description
Knight is a character who appears throughout the Gridman Universe, initially introduced in the television series SSSS.Gridman under the designation Anti. He is a sentient kaiju created by the human antagonist Akane Shinjo within the personal computer world of Tsutsujidai. Programmed with a singular obsession to defeat and surpass Gridman, the hyper agent hero, Anti was given a unique ability to copy the powers and forms of his opponents. In his human-sized form, he appears as a young man with short gray hair and red eyes, wielding a handheld buzzsaw as a weapon.
Driven by his directive to outperform Gridman, Anti initially serves as a violent rival, often forcing direct confrontations to prove his superiority. Over the course of SSSS.Gridman, he begins to develop genuine emotions and self-awareness beyond his original purpose. This evolution culminates when he chooses to protect Gridman rather than destroy him, defying his creator. This act of defiance triggers his transformation into a Gridman-like form known as Gridknight, representing his shift from a creation of hatred to a being of his own will.
By the time of the sequel series SSSS.Dynazenon, Anti has fully shed his old identity and adopted the title of Knight. He is markedly more stoic and reserved, having matured into a serious guardian. Alongside the kaiju ally Anosillus the 2nd, he travels across worlds to protect the innocent from kaiju threats, operating as an independent and mysterious figure who offers aid to the main cast of that series when they are in danger. In this role, Knight demonstrates a deeply ingrained sense of honor, loyalty, and justice born from his struggle to define himself beyond his violent origins.
In the crossover film Gridman Universe, Knight takes center stage as a crucial ally to both the SSSS.Gridman and SSSS.Dynazenon casts. The film reveals that his existence has created a temporal paradox where younger and older versions of himself coexist across the universes created by Gridman. Knight is one of the first to understand the threat posed by the entity Mad Origin, an embodiment of primordial chaos attacking Gridman's consciousness and causing the multiverse to collapse. He works closely with his younger self and the other heroes to fight back. The film also provides closure for his character arc with his creator Akane, who directly apologizes to him for the suffering she caused, allowing him to fully move past his origins as a weapon.
Knight's abilities revolve around his copy power, which allows him to maintain his primary combat form, Gridknight. As Gridknight, he is a powerful armored giant wielding a sword known as the Gridknight Calibur. He can combine with the Assist Weapons from SSSS.Gridman to achieve Full Power Gridknight, a form that matches Gridman's own ultimate configuration. In Gridman Universe, he also gains the ability to fuse with the giant robot Dynazenon to create Kaiser Gridknight, a massive combiner that dramatically increases his physical strength and combat power. His growth throughout the timeline establishes him as a true hero in his own right, no longer a reflection or copy of Gridman, but a peer capable of standing alongside him to defend reality itself.
