Description
Kirawus is an Ainu man who comes from a region near Kushiro in Hokkaido, where he is the youngest child in his family. His name, meaning wearing horn, originates from a childhood habit of playing while wearing deer antlers.

In terms of appearance, Kirawus is of average height with dark hair that he ties back with a traditional Ainu headband known as a matanpushi, which covers his eyebrows and forehead. He has sideburns that extend past his jaw and visible crow's feet that might suggest he is middle-aged, though his exact age is not specified. His typical attire consists of Ainu robes, and he keeps a knife tucked into the cloth around his waist. When traveling in open areas, he is usually seen carrying a rifle.

Kirawus possesses a personality defined by practicality and a logical approach to situations. When he first encounters Asirpa, for instance, he questions why she continues to use an outdated hunting bow rather than a more powerful rifle, though he accepts her explanation that firearms are too unwieldy for her small frame. This straightforward, no-nonsense attitude carries through his interactions, as he frequently questions plans and offers alternative options, particularly when working alongside his companion Kadokura. He does, however, retain some belief in luck, even if reason remains his primary guide. Beyond his practical nature, he is deeply devoted to following Ainu traditions, beliefs, and cultural values, much like other Ainu characters in the story.

His motivations center on helping his community. He joins the group associated with Hijikata Toshizou with the clear purpose of securing resources to aid his disaster-stricken home village. In this role, he serves as a guide and interpreter, bridging the gap between Ainu and Japanese cultures with notable ease.

Kirawus is first introduced in the wetlands of Karafuto, where the main characters encounter him while investigating false allegations made against the soldier Tanigaki Genjirou. At that time, Kirawus had found a dead doe alongside a rifle belonging to Nihei Tetsuzou, a man he had gone bear hunting with ten years earlier. After being struck from behind and losing consciousness, he awoke to find the animal defiled and consequently assumed Tanigaki was responsible. This leads to Tanigaki being taken prisoner by the Ainu village. Kirawus grants Sugimoto and Asirpa three days to find the true culprit, Anehata Shiton, while Tanigaki is held in a bear cub cage. After witnessing the bizarre scene of Anehata attempting to mount a brown bear and subsequently being killed, Kirawus leads the process of skinning the bear using a unique local method he describes as taking off their clothes, and invites the group back to the village for a proper ceremonial send-off of the bear spirit.

He later becomes a more regular companion to Kadokura, a former jailer, and Hijikata Toshizou, working with them in the search for the escaped convict Sekiya Waichirou. Kirawus acts as a cultural interpreter for the group, using his knowledge to translate and navigate situations within Ainu communities, such as when he leads Hijikata's group to a village in Nemuro to learn about a figure known as Youichirou the Manslayer. His partnership with Kadokura provides a dynamic of banter and mutual respect; Kirawus often mocks Kadokura while also proving himself a capable and calm presence amid the chaos of the gold rush. He also reunites with and assists the powerful Ushiyama Tatsuma during their investigations around a frozen lake.

Several key relationships define his role in the story. His initial conflict with Tanigaki resolves when the misunderstanding is cleared, and Kirawus later offers a drunken apology and shares a cup of alcohol as a gesture of goodwill, even bringing the cup to Tanigaki's lips himself. This leads to a conversation where Kirawus asks Tanigaki about his use of Nihei's outdated rifle, demonstrating his interest in others' histories.

In terms of development, Kirawus does not undergo a dramatic personal transformation but rather reveals his depth through consistent behavior. His protective feelings toward his home village become evident as he works alongside Hijikata's faction to secure resources, showing a practical commitment to his community's survival. His partnership with Kadokura grows from a simple working relationship into a more developed comedic and respectful dynamic, with Kirawus serving as a voice of reason and a counterbalance to Kadokura's notoriously bad luck.

His notable abilities stem from his Ainu upbringing and experience. He is an accomplished hunter with sharp instincts, skilled in tracking and using a rifle. He possesses extensive knowledge of Ainu cultural practices, including the proper rituals for sending off animal spirits and the specific methods of skinning bears. He also demonstrates linguistic and cross-cultural skills, serving effectively as a translator and interpreter who navigates between Ainu and Japanese societies with ease. His observational skills are sharp, allowing him to identify a rifle based on notches carved into its stock from a decade earlier.
