Description
Kōhei Nikaidō is a recurring antagonist in Golden Kamuy, serving as a subordinate to the primary villain, First Lieutenant Tsurumi. A former soldier in the Seventh Division of the Imperial Japanese Army, Nikaidō is a young man of slender build with a pale complexion, dark, disheveled hair, and noticeably bloodshot eyes that reflect his unstable mental state. His background is rooted in the brutal environment of the military, where his loyalty to Tsurumi became absolute after witnessing the lieutenant’s charisma and ruthlessness.

In terms of personality, Nikaidō is volatile, fanatical, and prone to sudden emotional swings. He displays a childlike devotion to Tsurumi, often seeking his praise, yet he can shift instantly into a cold, sadistic killer. He takes genuine pleasure in violence and killing, viewing it almost as a form of art or intimate connection with his victims. His worldview is simplistic: he believes that only Tsurumi understands him and that everyone else is either a tool or an enemy. Despite his instability, he occasionally shows a twisted sense of camaraderie toward certain comrades, though this loyalty is quickly discarded if Tsurumi’s orders demand otherwise.

Nikaidō’s primary motivation is to serve Tsurumi and help him obtain the hidden Ainu gold. Beyond simple obedience, he seeks the lieutenant’s approval as a surrogate father figure, having no apparent family or other attachments. The promise of the gold and the chaos its use would enable appeal to Nikaidō’s nihilistic side, but his driving force is personal devotion rather than ideology.

In the story, Nikaidō acts as an enforcer and assassin for Tsurumi’s faction. He frequently clashes with the protagonists, Sugimoto and Asirpa, as well as with other rival groups hunting the gold. His role is that of a persistent threat—unpredictable, dangerous, and difficult to reason with. Key relationships include his intense bond with Tsurumi, whom he addresses with deep reverence, and a tense, competitive dynamic with fellow Tsurumi loyalists like Hajime Tsukishima and Koito Otonoshin. He seems to view Tsukishima as a rival for Tsurumi’s attention, while Koito’s privileged background earns Nikaidō’s scorn and envy.

Development over the series shows Nikaidō as largely static in his core beliefs, but his psychological fragility becomes more pronounced. Moments of perceived abandonment or failure send him into murderous rages or depressive stupors. Later encounters reveal hints of a buried conscience or longing for normalcy, but these are quickly suppressed by his conditioning and loyalty. His arc serves as a cautionary example of how military indoctrination and charismatic leadership can deform a person beyond redemption.

Notable abilities include exceptional marksmanship and proficiency with a rifle, even in close combat. He is also skilled with a bayonet and is fearless in hand-to-hand fighting, relying on speed and aggression rather than technique. His most disturbing ability is his psychological warfare: he derives tactical advantage from his own unpredictability, unnerving opponents with sudden laughter, crying, or calm recitations of his kill count. He can endure significant injury without flinching, driven by an almost suicidal devotion to completing his mission. However, his emotional instability often becomes a liability, causing him to make reckless decisions when provoked or when he feels doubted by Tsurumi.
