Description
Kenji Hagiwara is a character from the anime film Case Closed: The Bride of Halloween. He is a deceased officer who formerly served in the Bomb Disposal Unit of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department’s Public Security Bureau. He was 22 years old at the time of his death, which occurred seven years before the main events of the story.

Originally, Hagiwara planned to inherit his father’s auto repair shop, but after the family business went bankrupt, he chose a career in law enforcement, reasoning that the police would always be a stable profession. He attended the police academy alongside Jinpei Matsuda, Rei Furuya, Hiromitsu Morofushi, and Wataru Date, and all five graduated together, forming a close bond. Following the academy, he joined the bomb squad, where he worked as a partner to his best friend, Jinpei Matsuda.

In terms of personality, Hagiwara is remembered as a carefree and humorous individual who often made jokes and maintained a relaxed demeanor, even under pressure. He was a heavy smoker and could often be seen with a cigarette. Despite his easygoing nature, he took his duties seriously and prioritized the safety of civilians, ensuring others were evacuated before his own well-being. He was also popular with women and possessed strong social and observational skills. Matsuda once noted that Hagiwara was not someone who told lies, though he might embellish his excuses to make them more palatable.

Hagiwara’s role in the story is largely a tragic one, as his death serves as a pivotal event that motivates other characters. He was killed in a residential building while attempting to defuse a bomb planted by a serial bomber. The bomb’s timer, which had initially stopped, unexpectedly restarted, leaving him and his squad members with only six seconds to escape. In his final moments, he had removed his protective defusal suit against protocol, which contributed to his death in the subsequent explosion. His death deeply affected his friend and partner, Jinpei Matsuda, who continued to send emails to Hagiwara’s account even after he was gone. Matsuda would later die four years later while investigating the same bomber.

In Case Closed: The Bride of Halloween, Hagiwara appears in flashbacks and is a significant figure in the backstory of the present-day case. The film explores his relationships, particularly with his former academy classmates. He shared a childhood friendship with Jinpei Matsuda, characterized by mutual trust and teasing. He was also a protective and supportive younger brother to his older sister, Chihaya Hagiwara.

Regarding his abilities, Hagiwara was one of the top students at the police academy, which led to his quick recruitment into the bomb squad. He possessed a high level of mechanical aptitude due to his family’s auto repair background, and he was notably skilled at driving. The series creator has even identified him as the best driver among the characters. While he was proficient at defusing bombs, his speed was slightly slower than that of his partner, Jinpei Matsuda. He also had the unusual ability to put on and take off his protective bomb suit faster than the average person. He is shown driving a Mazda RX-7 FD3S, which is noted as his favorite car.
