Description
Maho Minami is the younger half-sister of guitar prodigy Ryusuke Minami and a central figure in the story as a talented singer and the primary love interest of the protagonist, Yukio "Koyuki" Tanaka.
Prior to the events of the narrative, Maho lived in the United States with her brother, which made her fluent in English. This background, however, also resulted in her struggling with reading kanji after returning to Japan, leaving her nearly illiterate in written Japanese despite speaking it comfortably.
Maho has a complex and layered personality, presenting herself as brash, tough, and confident on the surface, yet being emotionally fragile, insecure, and easily hurt underneath. This insecurity extends to her own singing ability; despite being an objectively gifted vocalist, she lacks confidence in her talent and needs reassurance from others like Koyuki. Her aspirations are not solely focused on music, as she hopes to one day become a successful filmmaker or actress. She is also noted to have worked as an amateur model. Her fashionable style is a consistent trait, with her daily outfits and hairstyles often varying throughout the series.
Her role in the story is primarily defined by her romantic relationship with Koyuki and her connection to the band BECK as the sister of its leader, Ryusuke. She is the one who first recognizes Koyuki's raw musical talent upon hearing him sing a single line of a song, which sparks her initial interest in him. As their relationship develops, Maho becomes a significant source of motivation and emotional support for Koyuki as he navigates the challenges of his band and part-time jobs.
Maho is very forward and active in her pursuit of Koyuki, initiating much of their physical and emotional intimacy. This includes surprising him with a kiss on their first date, coming to his house to take a shower, and even sleeping in the same blanket with him, all of which leave the more cautious Koyuki uncertain about her true feelings. She is single-minded in her affection, remaining focused on Koyuki even when receiving attention from other suitors like her friend Yoshito.
Her relationship with her older brother, Ryusuke, is touch-and-go, with periods of getting along well and others of fighting or refusing to speak. Despite this, Ryusuke acts as a caring older brother figure who is aware of her feelings for Koyuki and actively supports the relationship. He looks out for her and, in a notable instance in the manga, even gives Koyuki a condom with the instruction to take care of his sister.
Throughout the series, Maho undergoes significant development. Her relationship with Koyuki starts with ambiguity, as it is often unclear to him if she returns his feelings, but it gradually becomes more defined and obvious. By the end of the manga, the two officially start dating after the band's American tour. A major test for their relationship occurs when Maho decides to study abroad in England. Her feelings for Koyuki are so deep that she nearly gives up the opportunity, but she goes at his encouragement. The long-distance relationship leads to a buildup of misunderstandings and estrangement, culminating in Koyuki recklessly leaving a BECK performance to find her in England, where they have a dramatic reunion and reaffirm their feelings for one another.
Regarding her abilities, singing is her most notable talent, and she is shown performing both casually to herself and on stage at a festival with Koyuki. Her bilingualism in English and Japanese is also a key trait, though her weakness in reading kanji is a recurring detail. She is considered beautiful, with long legs and a look that suits acting, and her appearance is often used for fan service moments within the story.
