Description
Pig is the main protagonist of the anime Butareba: The Story of a Man Turned into a Pig. He is a young Japanese man, described as an ordinary otaku, who loses consciousness after eating raw pig liver and awakens in the fantasy world of Mesteria. Instead of arriving as a human, however, he finds himself reincarnated in the body of a pig, trapped in a muddy pigpen. He retains his full human memories, personality, and intelligence, but he has no way to speak to others in words.
In terms of background, Pig was a fairly run-of-the-mill hobbyist and heavy consumer of anime and related interests, and he carries that mindset into his new life. He is pragmatic and quick to assess his strange situation, but he is also somewhat perverted, and his mind frequently fills with crude and inappropriate thoughts, especially about attractive girls. Because the girl who rescues him can read minds, she is constantly exposed to his unfiltered inner monologue, which becomes a recurring source of comedy and embarrassment. Despite his lecherous tendencies, he is not cruel or selfish at heart, and he shows genuine humility and gratitude when others help him.
His motivations center on two goals. The first is to find a way to return to his human form, and he hopes that reaching the royal capital and appealing to the king will offer a solution. The second is to repay Jess for her kindness. After she saves him from the pigpen and allows him to accompany her, he learns that she belongs to the Yethma, a discriminated group of servants forced to wear collars and ostracized by society. The more he witnesses the prejudice and danger she faces, the more he realizes he cannot simply abandon her to pursue his own goal, and protecting her begins to drive his actions alongside his desire to become human again.
Pig's place in the story is that of the central figure whose journey structures the narrative. He accompanies Jess on the road toward the capital, and much of the plot revolves around the pair's travels, the conflicts they encounter, and the schemes of the people around them. His knowledge from his past life and his ability to think strategically despite his animal body often prove crucial in navigating these situations. His key relationship is with Jess, who becomes his closest companion; she accepts him despite his boorish thoughts, and their bond deepens into mutual trust and loyalty. Other characters he meets along the way become traveling allies and occasional complications, but Jess remains the emotional center of his story.
As a pig, Pig has no combat strength or magical powers, but he is not powerless. He keeps his human-level reasoning, which allows him to analyze people and plans in ways others do not expect, and he possesses a notably keen sense of smell that serves as a practical tool for tracking and sensing his surroundings. Since Jess can read minds, he can communicate with her through his thoughts even though he cannot speak aloud, giving the pair a unique method of coordination. His limitations are physical rather than mental, and the story frequently emphasizes how his wits compensate for his lack of strength and mobility.
Over the course of the anime, Pig develops from a self-absorbed otaku preoccupied with his own misfortune and salacious fantasies into someone who takes real responsibility for another person. He grows increasingly attentive to Jess's suffering and the injustices aimed at the Yethma, and he becomes willing to put himself at risk for her sake. His initial desire to escape his pig body gradually coexists with a stronger sense of duty and care, and by the end of the series he is defined less by what he lost and more by the person he chooses to stand beside.
