Vishnu reigns as the supreme divine authority and benevolent goddess ruler of the celestial realm Tenkūkai. Her central duty is maintaining harmony across the interconnected worlds—Tenkūkai, the human realm (Ningenkai), and the Asura realm—using spiritual energy called Sohma. She governs with aid from the Hachibushu, eight legendary guardians reincarnated to protect Tenkūkai, and her trusted second-in-command, Indrah.
Foreseeing the resurgence of the destructive Asura Gods led by Shiva, Vishnu initiates the central conflict by transmigrating martial artists Shurato Hidaka and Gai Kuroki from Earth to Tenkūkai during their tournament. She identifies them as reincarnations of key Hachibushu members—Shurato as Shura-Oh and Gai as Yasha-Oh—to bolster Tenkūkai's defenses. Shiva corrupts Gai with dark Sohma during the transmigration, compromising her plan.
Early in the narrative, Indrah, secretly aligned with the Asura Gods, betrays Vishnu. He petrifies her into a stone statue, framing Shurato and the Hachibushu warrior Hyūga for the act. This leaves Tenkūkai vulnerable. Using her remaining power moments before complete petrification, she teleports Shurato, Hyūga, and the young spirit priestess Lakshu to safety, igniting their quest to clear their names and restore her.
Her petrified state persists through much of the initial arc, preventing the resurrection of fallen warriors and weakening Tenkūkai. After Shurato and his allies expose Indrah's treachery and defeat him, Vishnu is resurrected. She resumes leadership and participates directly in the escalating war against Shiva and the Asura Gods.
In the later OVA series "Dark Genesis" (Sōsei e no Antō), Vishnu's role diminishes due to her weakened state post-conflict with Shiva. She becomes a target for Scrimill, a malevolent entity born from the grief of Mina Kuroki (Gai's sister on Earth). Scrimill seeks to exploit Vishnu's connection to cosmic harmony to forge a new universe, forcing the Hachibushu to defend her again.
Conceptually, Vishnu embodies protective divinity and the struggle against primordial chaos. Her character design and narrative function draw directly from Hindu mythology, where she represents preservation and balance within the Trimurti alongside Brahma (creator) and Shiva (destroyer). Within the series' lore, Brahma sacrificed his physical form millennia earlier to seal the Asura Gods, leaving Vishnu as the primary guardian of cosmic equilibrium. Her efforts focus on guiding warriors like Shurato toward understanding that true balance requires acknowledging both light and darkness as intrinsic, eternal forces.
