Description
Hinoe is a recurring youkai, or supernatural being, who appears in the Natsume's Book of Friends series, including the film The Stone Waker and the Strange Visitor. She is a powerful female entity who takes on a human-like appearance to interact with the world. Hinoe has a striking and elegant look, characterized by her long, dark blue hair often tied with golden ornaments and a treasured silver hairpin. She has ghostly pale skin, red eyes, and wears a colorful traditional michiyuki coat over a kimono, often seen smoking tobacco from a long pipe or floating effortlessly in the air.

Hinoe’s personality is a complex mix of pride, aloofness, and hidden warmth. She generally looks down on others and has a twisted sense of humor, which can make her seem cruel or dismissive. Like many youkai, she is prone to boredom and will only help others if she feels like it at that moment. A significant aspect of her personality is a strong dislike for men, the exact reason for which has never been disclosed. Despite this harsh exterior, she possesses a secretly kind heart and becomes deeply protective of those she cares about.

Her motivations and role in the story are heavily tied to her past with Takashi Natsume’s grandmother, Reiko Natsume. Hinoe first met Reiko in a forest and, intending to play a cruel trick, offered to guide the lost girl back to human civilization. However, when a crow stole her precious hairpin, Reiko immediately jumped into a lake to retrieve it, astonishing Hinoe with her selfless act. From that moment on, Hinoe was lovestruck and developed a powerful, enduring affection for Reiko, admiring her beauty and strength.

This profound attachment to Reiko extends to her grandson, Takashi, because of his uncanny resemblance to her. Initially, Hinoe’s interest in Takashi is grudging, seeing him as a pale substitute for the woman she truly loved. She is part of a group of youkai known as the Dog's Circle, alongside powerful figures like Misuzu and Madara (Nyanko-sensei). Over time, her feelings for Takashi evolve from a fascination based on his grandmother into a genuine, individual affection. She grows to worry openly for his safety, offers him critical advice and information about other youkai, and acts as a protective mentor, even threatening those who would harm him.

In terms of abilities, Hinoe is a formidable youkai, hinted to be on the same level of power as Misuzu and the great Madara. She possesses extensive knowledge of curses and magical arts, making her an expert in these fields. She also owns several magic scrolls and has a wide network of powerful acquaintances, which contributes to the respect she commands from other strong youkai. Her weapon of choice is sometimes a scythe, and she is known to use her magic to help Takashi, such as when she helped remove a curse from his arm. Throughout her appearances, Hinoe demonstrates that beneath her disdain for men and her proud demeanor lies a loyal, caring, and powerful ally to Takashi Natsume.
