Description
Kazuki Kurauchi is a character from the anime and manga series World Trigger. He is a B-Rank agent who serves as a Shooter for Ōji Squad. Known for his serious and studious personality, Kurauchi stands out not only for his combat skills but also for his deep, almost academic interest in the mechanics of Triggers.
Kurauchi has a tall and lean build, with neatly styled brown hair and a consistently calm, often expressionless face. This stoic exterior, however, belies a surprisingly emotional interior. While he appears robotic or unflappable, he is easily moved to tears by emotional films or events, a trait that contrasts sharply with his usual demeanor. He is a methodical thinker, always analyzing the situation to formulate a plan, which makes him a reliable strategist in the field. Outside of his duties as a Border agent, Kurauchi is the student council president at Rokueikan High School. Because of this role, his schoolmates, including Tetsuji Arafune and Sumiharu Inukai, often call him by the nickname Prez. He has a great deal of pride in his work and approaches his responsibilities with a level of seriousness befitting his position.
Within the narrative, Kurauchi serves as a supporting character, primarily acting as a rival and benchmark for the protagonist squad, Tamakoma Second. During the large-scale B-Rank Rank Wars, he and his squadmates are key opponents, demonstrating the strategies and coordination required to succeed in the upper echelons of Border's ranking system. Kurauchi is regarded as the centerpiece of Ōji Squad's mid-ranged combat. His role is often to provide covering fire and tactical support, allowing his more aggressive teammates to close in on opponents. He also briefly steps into the role of a commentator during matches, where his extensive and passionate knowledge of Trigger mechanics is highlighted by more senior agents like Kirie Konami. His ability to dissect the tactical nuances of a fight, such as identifying the specific weaknesses of a Grasshopper user, proves invaluable for the audience and his teammates alike.
His relationships are a key part of his character. Kurauchi has a long-standing partnership with his captain, Kazuaki Ōji. The two were originally members of the same Yuba Squad before leaving to form their own team, a move that speaks to a deep level of trust and friendship. He greatly respects Ōji's leadership and is quick to quiet other teammates to ensure they listen to the captain's plans. Within his current squad, he acts as a steadying influence and mentor to the younger Yutaka Kashio, not hesitating to offer guidance and instruction. He is also on good terms with his operator, Haya Kittaka, and was even responsible for toning down her original, overly extravagant uniform design. His relationships extend beyond his squad; he considers Kirie Konami to be very cute, jokingly remarking that he would like a grandchild like her, a comment that earned him the unofficial title of her honorary grandfather.
Kurauchi's development is subtle but significant as the series progresses. He transitions from being a regular member of a lower-ranked squad to a core component of a top B-Rank team. His evolution is most apparent in his deepened understanding of Triggers and tactics, moving from a skilled fighter to a more holistic strategist who can analyze the entire battlefield, a transition that solidifies his role as a key player in Rank Wars commentary and combat.
As a Shooter, Kurauchi is a flexible and dangerous opponent. He is highly proficient with the Hound bullet, a homing-type Trigger that makes him particularly lethal in open battlefields, especially when fighting alongside teammates who also wield the same bullet type. He also uses the Meteor bullet for its explosive power. His signature ability is the creation of a composite bullet called Salamander, which fuses Hound and Meteor. He can create this powerful projectile quickly and deploy it either as a single, high-range shot with immense destructive force, capable of leveling multiple houses, or in smaller cubes. Like all Border agents, he also uses Shield for defense, as well as the standard Grasshopper, which he has demonstrated on a top runner level, allowing him to traverse the map quickly and pick off vulnerable targets. Kurauchi's decision to study at Mikado City College is driven by his desire to formally study Triggers, reflecting that his passion for them is more than just practical, but a true intellectual pursuit.
