TV-Series
Description
Chiyoko Kurotori, who is almost always called by her nickname Choco, is the main protagonist of the series. She is a fifth-grade elementary school student with a deep and enthusiastic interest in the occult, including black magic, curses, and fortune-telling. Her nickname, Choco, is a phonetic play on the first part of her family name, Kurotori. Her ordinary school life takes a dramatic turn when a friend asks her to perform a love fortune. While attempting to summon Cupid, the messenger of love, Choco has a stuffy nose and mispronounces the incantation, inadvertently summoning the black witch Gyubid instead. Rather than being upset, Gyubid decides to take on the role of instructor and forces Choco to become her apprentice, training her in the ways of black magic.
Choco's personality is defined by her initial reluctance and lack of ambition regarding her witchcraft training. She is often portrayed as the only sane person amidst the bizarre supernatural events and eccentric personalities that surround her. Despite her misgivings about her apprenticeship, she is fundamentally a good-natured girl who tries to balance her normal life with her secret magical duties. Her genuine interest in the occult, while the cause of her predicament, also gives her a foundation of knowledge that surprises even Gyubid. She shows unexpected talent in areas such as drawing mystical circles and casting spells, revealing a natural aptitude she did not know she possessed. Her primary motivation throughout the story is not to become a powerful witch, but simply to manage the demands of her secret training, keep it hidden from her classmates and family, and navigate the various occult mysteries and problems that come her way. She often has to juggle these supernatural challenges with typical school life, such as dealing with the affections of classmates.
In the story, Choco serves as the central figure through which the magical and mundane worlds collide. Her role is that of a reluctant student of magic who is constantly thrown into situations requiring her to use her developing skills to solve problems, often involving her friends or school. A significant part of her experience is maintaining a double identity as an ordinary student during the day and a witch's apprentice at night. When engaging in occult activities, she is required to wear a distinctive lolita gothic outfit, which marks her transition into her magical role. Her relationships are key to the narrative. The most important is her complex bond with her mentor, Gyubid. Their relationship begins as hostile and forced, with Gyubid acting as a trickster mentor who loves to put Choco on the spot with tough training and pranks. However, it gradually develops into one of mutual respect, with Gyubid showing genuine care and protective instincts for her student, even going so far as to sacrifice her own freedom by casting a forbidden spell to save one of Choco's classmates. Choco's long-time friend from kindergarten, Meg Shion, is another significant person in her life. She also has to deal with rivals like Kyou Oogata and an unreciprocated love triangle with classmates Ryoutarou and Taiyou, for whom she has no romantic interest. Her grandmother, Chikako Kurotori, is secretly a former student of the Black Witch Academy herself and provides quiet assistance and observation from the background.
Over the course of the series, Choco undergoes notable development, primarily in her magical abilities and her relationship with Gyubid. She progresses through the witch ranking system, achieving the fifth rank, then the fourth, and later the third rank. This progression demonstrates her growth in skill and knowledge. More importantly, her attitude shifts from complete resistance to a grudging acceptance and understanding of her role, leading to a much stronger and more respectful partnership with Gyubid. As a witch apprentice, Choco's notable abilities include the talent for creating precise mystical circles and successfully casting spells, a skill she initially discovers by accident. While her training is often a source of frustration, she learns to apply her magical knowledge to resolve the supernatural mysteries she encounters. A constant condition of her magical activities is the necessity of wearing her lolita gothic outfit whenever she is actively involved in occult practices.
