Description
Cheese is a small, light brown dog who is a resident of Uncle Jam's bakery and a loyal companion to the superhero Anpanman. His origin story begins when he was a starving puppy abandoned in a forest, where he was discovered and rescued by a young Anpanman on one of his first patrols. The hero saved the pup by breaking off a part of his own anpan head to feed him, forging a deep and lasting bond between them. After being brought to the bakery, the character Batako-san gave him the name Cheese and advocated for him to stay, securing his permanent home there.
In terms of appearance, Cheese is characterized by his short, rabbit-like ears and a dark brown tip on his tail. He lives in a loaf-shaped doghouse situated outside the bakery and has his own food and water bowls. Over the course of the series, his manner of movement has evolved; he was initially depicted walking on four legs but is now frequently seen standing upright, though he still sits and rests like a typical dog.
Cheese possesses a personality that blends several traits. He is known for his fierce bravery and will charge into dangerous situations to help Anpanman and others in need. Despite this courage, he also serves as a source of comic relief, often displaying overdramatic and silly behavior. He has a very large appetite and eats quickly, yet he can also be lazy at times, particularly when it comes to doing chores. He is regarded as a wise dog or a super watchdog, showing great intelligence and an ability to understand human language, even though he cannot speak and communicates primarily through barks and gestures that his friends can intuitively grasp.
Cheese's motivations are rooted in loyalty and a desire to help his friends. He is a dependable ally who supports the daily life and heroic missions of those at the bakery. His role in the story includes assisting Batako-san with baking tasks and deliveries, as well as cleaning and laundry. He is often the first to notice an SOS signal from someone in distress and uses his exceptional hearing and fine sense of smell to track scents and locate missing individuals. He also plays a crucial practical role by helping to carry and deliver replacement heads to Anpanman when his own head becomes weak or damaged from feeding others. Additionally, he is capable of driving the Anpanman-go vehicle.
Key relationships define Cheese's place in the world. His most significant bond is with Anpanman, his rescuer and the hero he is fiercely loyal to. He also shares a very close relationship with Batako-san, who named him and whom he frequently accompanies on deliveries and helps in the bakery. He maintains friendships with other characters like the young Melonpanna and is noted to have a romantic connection with a character named Rare Cheese.
In terms of development, Cheese's design and behavior have seen small changes over time, such as the shift to more upright walking and a change in the depiction of his ear color between different media. An early concept for the character was that he was a talking dog, but this idea was discontinued, preserving his non-verbal communication style. Regarding the specific film Eiga Soreike! Anpanman Fuwafuwa Fuwari to Kumo no Kuni, the available information indicates that Cheese joins the core team of characters who support Anpanman and the cloud child Fuwari on their adventure. He provides his usual dependable assistance throughout the film, although the narrative does not focus on him driving forward central plot points. His role remains consistent with his established character as a trustworthy and resourceful ally within the framework of the story.
