Description
Madoka Kyōno is the central protagonist of the story. She is a female high school student in her second year at Kamogawa Girls' High School, where she is the president and sole member of the school's Jersey Club. Her background includes a deeply personal connection to the sea: her mother died at sea when Madoka was young, and the loss partly drives her fierce love for her hometown of Kamogawa and her desire to protect it. At age ten, she nearly drowned in the ocean, an event that caused her to encounter the mysterious robotic craft called Vox Aura and left a mark known as a Memoria on her lower right back—a physical sign of her bond with the machine.

Madoka's personality is defined by her boundless energy, enthusiasm, and straightforward kindness. She is cheerful, impulsive, and deeply compassionate, always ready to help anyone she sees in need. This extends to her habit of wearing a school swimsuit under her jersey or uniform during summer so that she can perform water rescues at a moment’s notice. She has a catchphrase that often punctuates her actions, such as "maru!" or "maaru!" which reflects her upbeat and determined nature. She is very athletic and frequently acts as a substitute player for other school clubs, but she is not academically inclined, and she is notably innocent and oblivious when it comes to romantic matters.

Her main motivation is to protect the people and town of Kamogawa, the place she loves above all else. This core drive leads her to accept the request from Lan, an alien girl from the planet Le Garite, to become the pilot of the Vox Aura. She agrees without hesitation because the robot is linked to her childhood incident and because she sees it as a way to defend her home from extraterrestrial threats. As the story progresses, her motivation expands to include protecting her new friends—Lan and Muginami—and finding a peaceful resolution to the intergalactic war between Le Garite and De Metrio.

Madoka's role in the narrative is that of the protagonist and the emotional anchor of the trio. She is the first to pilot a Vox unit and the one who forms the Jersey Club with Lan and Muginami after they join her school. Her positive attitude and unwavering trust often help bridge the gaps between the three girls, who come from different worlds and initially have conflicting loyalties. She is the heart of the group, and her actions frequently drive the plot forward, whether through her instinctive combat decisions or through her stubborn refusal to give up on people, even those who are enemies.

Her key relationships are with Lan and Muginami. Lan is the alien who first recruits Madoka and later becomes her close friend and fellow club member; their bond deepens as they fight side by side. Muginami, a girl from the opposing side who initially infiltrates Earth, is also drawn into the club and becomes a trusted companion. Together, the three form an inseparable friendship that transcends their different origins and the wars of their home planets. Madoka’s relationships with other characters include her cousin Youko Nakaizumi and her uncle Hiroshi Nakaizumi, who serve as her family anchors in Kamogawa. She also interacts with the leaders Dizelmine and Villagulio, and her compassion influences their eventual reconciliation.

Madoka undergoes significant development over the course of the series. Initially, she is a straightforward, action-oriented girl who dives into problems headfirst, but she gradually learns to handle the immense responsibility of piloting the Vox and the heavy emotional weight of the conflict. She experiences a phenomenon called the "Reincarnation," which opens a rift to another dimension, and temporarily swaps consciousness with the enigmatic character Yurikano. Through these trials, she matures and becomes more reflective, while still retaining her core optimism. She makes a vow to never use the Vox for war again, but when the situation demands it, she willingly breaks that promise to stand with her friends and protect what matters. In the end, her actions help end the war and bring both sides together, and she continues her Jersey Club activities even after graduation, traveling across space with Lan and Muginami.

Notable abilities include her exceptional physical fitness and coordination, which allow her to be proficient in many sports and to pilot the Vox Aura effectively from the start. More importantly, she has a unique synergy with the Vox Aura due to her Memoria, enabling her to unlock the robot's full potential and manifest the Reincarnation—a powerful extra-dimensional phenomenon that can turn the tide of battle. While she is not a supernaturally powerful fighter outside of the cockpit, her determination, empathy, and unwavering spirit are consistently presented as her greatest strengths.
