Description
Hibito Nanba is the younger brother of Mutta Nanba and a central figure in Space Brothers. Born on September 17, 1996, his birth coincided with a moment of national celebration in Japan, which his brother Mutta believes blessed him with inherent good fortune. Hibito is the first to fulfill the childhood promise the brothers made to become astronauts, rising through the ranks to become the first Japanese person to walk on the moon. His signature physical trait is a single spike of hair on the top of his head, and he is popularly known by the nickname Samurai Boy in the United States.

In terms of personality, Hibito is characterized by a positive, straightforward, and hardworking nature. He is eager to fulfill his dreams and possesses a bright outlook, which is essential to his success. While he may not be as naturally sharp or academically gifted as his older brother Mutta, he makes up for this with pure determination and a fearless attitude. For much of the story, he serves as the fearless alpha male who blazes a trail for his older brother to follow, providing both inspiration and a gentle source of irritation to Mutta. Despite his brilliance and fame, he can be somewhat absent-minded. His role in the narrative is to be the successful astronaut who rekindles his brother's lost dream, setting the entire plot in motion.

Hibito's primary motivation is his deep-seated love for space exploration, a dream he has held since childhood. He is also profoundly motivated by his bond with his brother, Mutta. He always believed in Mutta's potential and secretly pushed him toward becoming an astronaut, showcasing a deep respect and a desire to share his dream. Key relationships define his journey. The most important is with his brother Mutta, forming the titular Space Brothers. Hibito leads the way, acting as a role model, but their dynamic is one of mutual respect and encouragement rather than simple rivalry. He shares a close bond with Sharon Kaneko, a family friend who inspired his love for playing the guitar and his desire to learn. At NASA, his mentor is the veteran astronaut Brian Jay, who took Hibito under his wing and trained him into a professional astronaut, becoming a brother-like figure to him.

The character undergoes a significant transformation following a traumatic accident on the moon. While on a mission, he experiences a near-death event, running out of oxygen and only being saved at the last moment. The psychological aftermath of this event is severe; he develops post-traumatic stress disorder and a panic disorder, which triggers panic attacks at the mere thought of putting on a spacesuit. This trauma fundamentally shatters his previously fearless image as a Broken Ace. He becomes plagued by self-doubt and anxiety, hiding from the public and, most painfully, from his brother, as his greatest fear is having his image as a fearless man destroyed. This event flips the brothers' dynamic: Mutta becomes the confident one, while Hibito is lost and struggling. Hibito's recovery and his attempts to confront this psychological hurdle become a major focus of his character arc.

As an astronaut, Hibito possesses remarkable abilities. He has extraordinary talent as an astronaut, which has allowed him to rise quickly within NASA. He is an excellent team player who remains calm and smart in emergency situations, as demonstrated when he tried to save a fellow astronaut during a crash on the moon. However, his most notable ability is his determination; he is a hard worker who succeeds through sheer force of will, even when facing academic or psychological challenges.
