Description
Adalman is a prominent supporting character whose long and tragic history transforms him into one of the most powerful and loyal members of the Jura Tempest Federation. He is an ancient undead being, originally a high-ranking human cardinal of the Western Holy Church within the Holy Empire of Ruberios. In his mortal life, he was also a prince of a small kingdom and a prodigy of holy magic, possessing abilities that approached the level of a saint. His immense talent and popularity, however, bred fear and jealousy among the church's ruling council, the Seven Sages. They orchestrated his demise by sending him on a suicide mission to purify an undead threat in the Western Forest, intending for him to be killed.

Adalman and his loyal retinue, including his best friend and bodyguard Albert, were slain during this mission. In a misguided act of salvation, his friend Gadora used a secret reincarnation magic to bring him back. Because the area was saturated with dark energy and the curses of the dead, Adalman was resurrected not as a human, but as a powerful undead wight. He was then bound by a curse from the demon lord Kagali to serve as the eternal guardian of the puppet nation of Jistav. For over a thousand years, he served in this capacity, eventually becoming a subordinate of the demon lord Clayman as one of his Five Fingers, known as the Index Finger.

Physically, Adalman most often appears as a skeleton clad in immaculate white priestly robes, a vestige of his former high rank in the church. Despite his undead state and skeletal form, which he has grown accustomed to and even prefers, he can temporarily reconstruct a youthful, human-like appearance, particularly when fusing with his dragon companion. His personality is a study in contrasts. While his existence is rooted in tragedy, he is not a brooding villain. After being freed from the curses binding him, he reveals a friendly, talkative, and even eccentric character. His most defining trait is his boundless and theatrical devotion. Having once been a fervent follower of the goddess Luminous Valentine, he transfers this zealous faith entirely to Rimuru Tempest, whom he venerates as a god, and to Shuna, whom he reveres as a high priestess. His over-the-top displays of loyalty and reverence often embarrass Rimuru and Shuna, drawing comparisons to the similarly devout demon lord Diablo.

Adalman's role in the story begins as an antagonist, where he confronts Shuna's forces during Clayman's assault on Tempest. Underestimating Shuna, he is defeated and, through her unique purification magic, is finally freed from the ancient curses that enslaved him. Grateful and liberated, he voluntarily pledges his loyalty to Rimuru and joins the Jura Tempest Federation. He and his entire undead legion are integrated into the nation, becoming the guardians of the 60th and later the 70th floor of Rimuru's labyrinthine dungeon. His development is remarkable. Initially weakened by his purification, he absorbs the dense magical essence of the dungeon to evolve from a Wight into a Wight King. Later, with a gift of faith from Rimuru and by developing a unique skill called Holy and Demonic Reversal, he overcomes the undead's natural weakness to holy magic. This evolution culminates in his awakening as a Light Spirit Bones, an intermediate-level holy spiritual being, and he is appointed as one of the Twelve Guardian Lords of Tempest with the title of Gehenna Lord, the Phantom King.

His key relationships are central to his character. He shares an unbreakable bond with his loyal subordinates: Albert, his right-hand man and a former holy knight who evolves into a Death Paladin, and Venti (or Wenty), a massive undead dragon who becomes a powerful ally and can take human form. He holds deep gratitude for Shuna, his liberator, and absolute, near-worshipful loyalty to Rimuru, his new god. He also reunites with his old friend Gadora, who is responsible for his undead transformation.

Adalman's notable abilities are extensive and make him a formidable magic user. He is a master of both holy magic and necromancy, a rare combination for an undead. He commands the Immortal Legion, an army of thousands of undead soldiers and knights. After his evolution, he gains the Ultimate Gift Grimoire, also known as the Necronomicon, which grants him complete control over magic, allowing him to cast spells like Exploding Star Meteor Storm, a powerful summoning magic that rains down over a thousand metears. His unique skill, Holy and Demonic Reversal, converts his and his army's vulnerability to holy attacks into an attribute of light, effectively removing their primary weakness. This combination of immense magical power, command over a vast army, unwavering loyalty, and a quirky, devoted personality makes Adalman one of the most unique and valuable assets in Rimuru Tempest's nation.
