Description
Dino is a character from the anime and light novel series That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, known as the Sleeping Ruler. He holds the sixth seat among the eight Demon Lords of the Octagram and is a second-generation Demon Lord. His racial classification is that of a Fallen, a fallen angel, though he was not originally of this race. In the distant past, Dino was one of the Seven Angels of Origin, a seraph created by the Star King Dragon Veldanava to serve as his sword and chief advisor. After a great tragedy, he fell from grace and became a Fallen angel.

Dino's personality is defined almost entirely by an overwhelming and legendary laziness. He operates on a personal philosophy of achieving maximum results with the minimum possible effort and avoids any activity that would waste his energy unnecessarily. This lethargic demeanor means he is often seen with a sleepy, uninterested expression. Despite this, he is not shy or withdrawn; he can be sociable and communicative, but this friendliness is often a front to further his goal of doing nothing. He deflects responsibility and blame onto others when confronted and can be surprisingly shameless about his idleness, expecting others to provide for him. This lazy exterior, however, belies a sharp intellect and, when truly roused to action, he is capable of immense efficiency and speed.

Dino's motivations are deeply rooted in his past. For eons, he served Veldanava faithfully. However, after Veldanava and his wife Lucia were killed by humans, Dino was consumed by a murderous rage and destroyed the entire nation responsible. This act of revenge brought him no peace, and the loss of his purpose caused him to fall, becoming a Fallen angel. He sealed away a great portion of his own power and lost all meaning in his life. His only remaining thread of purpose became the silent observation and protection of Milim Nava, the daughter of his late master. For a long time, he simply wandered or freeloaded off other powerful beings like the Demon Lord Dagruel, living a life of indolence with no real goal. His encounter with Rimuru Tempest at the Walpurgis assembly, and later in the nation of Tempest, began to stir new feelings in him, offering a potential new meaning for his long existence.

Dino's role in the story is multifaceted, shifting from a background figure to a key player. Initially, he appears as an almost comedic, air-headed Demon Lord who attends meetings and then disappears. He is sent by Guy Crimson to spy on Rimuru, an assignment he accepts with characteristic reluctance. During his stay in Tempest, he ostensibly works as a researcher in Ramiris's labyrinth, but his true allegiances are complex. It is revealed that he is one of the Seven Heavenly Generals under the angelic beings Michael and Feldway, a remnant of his original angelic identity. This leads him to betray Rimuru and Ramiris, attempting to kidnap the latter on Feldway's orders, though this plan fails. Ultimately, disgusted by Feldway's madness and cruelty, especially his willingness to sacrifice Milim, Dino genuinely switches his allegiance back to Rimuru's side, providing vital intelligence and fighting against his former comrades.

His key relationships are defined by his long history and newfound connections. He was once deeply loyal to Veldanava, and this reverence extends to Veldanava's daughter, Milim, whom he secretly watches over. He is close to the Demon Lord Dagruel, having freeloaded at his residence for many years. He shares a friendly, teasing relationship with Ramiris, the Fairy Queen, with whom he has a rivalry that goes back to the time of Veldanava. His relationship with Rimuru Tempest is transformative. Initially a spy, Dino is won over by the high-quality food and comfortable lifestyle of Tempest, particularly cream puffs, humorously swearing allegiance for such comforts. This encounter begins to rekindle genuine emotions in him, giving him a new reason to exist beyond his ancient grief. He is also noted to have a contentious relationship with Rain, another subordinate of Guy Crimson; despite their shared laziness, Rain despises Dino for pushing his work onto her.

Dino's development is a journey from nihilistic sloth to rediscovered purpose. For millennia, he was a hollow shell, having lost his reason for being after Veldanava's death. His life was a meaningless cycle of sleeping and idleness. The events of the story, particularly his exposure to Rimuru and the threat posed by Michael and Feldway, force him to re-engage with the world. He is shown to have genuine regret for his betrayal of Tempest and its people, hesitating to fight his former friends even under mind control. His final decision to betray Feldway and fully commit to Rimuru represents the culmination of this change, as he once again finds something and someone worth fighting for, evolving his powers to break free from his past shackles and protect his new home.

Regarding his notable abilities, Dino is acknowledged as one of the world's most powerful swordsmen, considered by some to be the greatest of his era. He typically wields a mythical-grade greatsword called Houga or Fang of Ruin, but when serious, he unleashes his full power and dual-wields the legendary holy sword Excalibur and the demonic sword Caliburn. His abilities are intrinsically linked to his laziness. He possesses a unique skill named Sloth, which has the unique property of growing stronger the less its user moves. This skill can forcibly induce sleep and create powerful mental illusions. Through his ultimate skill, the Angelic skill Astarte (Heavenly King), he has the authority of Creative Evolution, which allows him to evolve his own skills. He used this to evolve Sloth into the Ultimate Skill Belphegor (King of Sloth), a sin-series skill whose power also wanes the more active the user is. Later, to free himself from Feldway's control, Dino fuses Astarte and Belphegor to create a new, incredibly potent ultimate skill: Astaroth (Fallen King), which combines the powers of creation, destruction, and absolute mental domination. Among his named techniques are abilities like Fallen Hypno to induce sleep, Fallen Catastrophe to cause mass slumber, and Fallen Strike for a devastating sword attack.
