Description
Hym is a fictional character from the anime and manga series Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai. He is originally depicted as a formidable antagonist before later becoming an ally to the main heroes. Known as the Pawn, Hym is a member of Hadlar's Royal Guard, an elite unit of warriors created from enchanted chess pieces.

Hym's background is unique, as he is not a living being in the traditional sense. He is a construct brought to life through forbidden magic, his body formed from a single pawn chess piece made of Orichalcum, a legendary, nearly indestructible metal. The Dark Lord Hadlar, with the assistance of the greater demon lord Vearn, used this magic to create Hym and four other chess piece warriors. Of this group, Hym was instilled with a specific inheritance: Hadlar's own passion and fighting spirit.

In terms of appearance, Hym initially takes the form of a tall, bald, and muscular humanoid figure made of silvery metal. His features are somewhat minimalist, reflecting his artificial origins. After a critical transformation later in the story, he undergoes a dramatic change, earning the title Silver-Haired Beast. In this new form, he grows a long, wild mane of silver hair, making him bear a strong resemblance to his creator, Hadlar.

Hym's personality is defined by a fierce and unwavering loyalty to his master, Hadlar. He is portrayed as cruel, violent, and always eager for a challenging battle, displaying a hot-headed and prideful nature. He is highly honorable in his own way, fighting his opponents fairly and ruthlessly, and will react with explosive anger to anyone who insults Hadlar. Early on, he develops a powerful, single-minded obsession with defeating the warrior Hyunckel, viewing him as his primary rival. However, following Hadlar's death, Hym inherits his master's life force and spirit, leading to a profound redemption. He sheds his obsessive hatred, learns to treasure the life he has been given, and genuinely befriends his former rival, Hyunckel. Though often exasperated by the antics of his smaller allies, he grows to respect them and willingly fights alongside them.

As an Orichalcum warrior, Hym possesses immense physical strength, speed, and agility, making him a master of close-range hand-to-hand combat. His body is nearly impervious to damage; only the most powerful weapons, spells like Medoroa, or aura-based techniques such as Grand Cross can harm him, and even then, his core must be struck to truly defeat him. His signature technique is the Heat Knuckle, where he enhances his fists with Frizz-type fire magic to deliver a devastating, fiery punch. After his transformation into the Silver-Haired Beast, he gains the ability to use Light Aura, which significantly increases his power and allows him to use a stronger version of his finishing move called the Aura Knuckle.

Hym serves a central role as a major obstacle for the Disciples of Avan, particularly during the battles at the Field of Death and Vearn's Palace. His story arc follows his development from a relentless enemy to a redeemed hero. His key relationship is with Hyunckel, born from a bitter rivalry that eventually transforms into a strong, respectful friendship. After his redemption, he joins the heroes in their final confrontation with Vearn, where his Light Aura proves vital in defeating the demon lord Mystvearn. By the end of the story, Hym has fully reformed and goes to live in peace with his newfound companions.
