Description
Chōun Shiryū is an eighteen-year-old female fighter and a second-year student at Seito Academy, where she holds the rank of Special A-Class. She is the modern-day successor to the legendary Chinese general Zhao Yun, inheriting his title of The Eternal Victorious. Her physical appearance is distinctive: she has long silver hair that reaches her back, with bangs that cover her forehead and strands that fall alongside her face, often hiding her ears. She typically keeps her eyes closed, and on the rare occasions she opens them, they are revealed to have cat-like pupils, a trait often linked to fighters who have a controlled connection to dragon powers. Standing at 170 centimeters tall, her measurements are listed as B89-W59-H87. She does not wear the standard Seito Academy uniform, instead opting for a brown vest over a white collared shirt with stripes, a dark brown skirt with red stripes on the bottom, knee-high black socks, and brown loafers. A tiger tattoo is located on her left shoulder blade. She wields a weapon called the Youtou Muramasa Zanryuu, which belongs to the Hyakuhekitou collection, and her signature technique is known as the Shiden Issen.
In personality, Chōun is characterized as kind-hearted, calm, and remarkably laid-back. She believes that violence is often unnecessary and that conflicts can ideally be resolved without bloodshed. The dominant traits of her character are her profound loyalty and devotion, particularly to her school, Seito Academy, and its leader, Gentoku Ryuubi. She has stated her willingness to die to protect Gentoku, and she carries out orders from Koumei Shokatsuryou without question, which indicates a pre-existing bond between them. While generally reserved, subtle hints of romantic feelings toward Gentoku are implied, most notably in the ending credits of Xtreme Xecutor, where she is seen blushing deeply while holding her. She also holds deep respect for her fellow student and Seito's strongest fighter, Unchou Kan-u, acknowledging that their strengths rival one another. A quieter, slightly contemplative side of her is shown in a non-combat scene where she practices bonsai trimming, only to become very disappointed in herself for having cut too much from the tree.
Chōun's role in the story is primarily that of a powerful protector and an agent for Seito Academy. Her motivations are rooted in her duty to safeguard her school's leader and to follow the strategic directives of Koumei. One of her earliest significant actions is being sent by Koumei to retrieve the Dragon Jade, a task that leads her to easily defeat the exhausted fighter Teni in a single strike. During this mission, she also confronts and overpowers Shimei Ryomou after the latter's dragon is awakened by the Dragon Jade, transporting the unconscious Ryomou to safety before delivering the jade to Kan-u. She later attempts to intervene when Hakufu's dragon goes out of control but is stopped by Ukitsu. Another primary aspect of her role is acting as a bodyguard for Gentoku Ryuubi. She single-handedly defends Gentoku from assassination attempts, such as effortlessly defeating Kakouen Myosai and multiple other attackers while remaining calm and her uniform unblemished. Her key relationships are therefore defined by service and protection: her unwavering loyalty to Koumei, her devoted guardianship of Gentoku, and her mutual respect with the powerhouse Kan-u, with whom she is also compared as a rival in strength.
While Chōun does not undergo a dramatic personal transformation, her development is shown through the consistent demonstration of her immense power and her deepening connection to her role. In later story events, such as in Great Guardians and Xtreme Xecutor, she continues her mission to protect Gentoku and becomes involved in efforts to restore fellow fighters who have fallen under possession or vengeful spirits, further cementing her position as one of Seito's most reliable and formidable warriors. Her full combat potential remains somewhat undefined, as she rarely faces a challenge that forces her to exert serious effort; she defeats powerful A-rank opponents seemingly without strain and with her eyes closed, suggesting a level of ability that is rarely fully tested. Her notable abilities, aside from her exceptional swordsmanship and the Shiden Issen technique, include her calm demeanor in combat, which allows her to assess situations and neutralize threats without unnecessary aggression. The cat-like quality of her eyes when opened implies a connection to latent or controlled dragon powers, though this aspect of her ability is not explored in depth.
