Description
Kan'u Unchō is a nineteen-year-old toushi, or fighter, who attends Seito Academy as a third-year student and serves as the spiritual successor to the legendary Three Kingdoms general Guan Yu. Her physical appearance is striking and distinctive: she is tall with tan skin, long dark purple hair that reaches down to her feet with the ends tied together, and light blue-grey eyes, often partially obscured by her bangs. Her typical attire is a modified version of the Seito Academy uniform, which consists of a revealing white sailor-style blouse with blue stripes and a yellow ribbon, a matching short blue skirt, loose white socks, and brown shoes.
The core of Kan'u’s character is defined by an unwavering sense of loyalty, primarily directed toward her leader, Gentoku Ryuubi. This devotion is the driving force behind nearly all of her actions. She is fiercely protective of Ryuubi, viewing her protection as her destiny and willing to endure great personal sacrifice, including capture and torture, to ensure Ryuubi's safety. Kan'u is deeply proud of her inherited name and title, having earned the moniker Goddess of War through relentless training and a reputation as one of the most powerful and feared toushi in the Kanto region. This pride, however, can manifest as overconfidence, a flaw she is forced to confront after suffering defeats, such as her first loss at the hands of Genchoku Jousho. Despite her formidable and sometimes arrogant exterior, Kan'u struggles with personal insecurities and a complex emotional life. Over the course of the series, she comes to terms with deep, often unspoken romantic feelings for Ryuubi, which become more apparent and lead to moments of internal conflict.
In the narrative of Ikki Tousen: Xtreme Xecutor and the preceding seasons, Kan'u's primary motivation remains the protection of Ryuubi and the defense of Seito Academy against hostile forces like Kyosho Academy. Her role in the story is that of a pivotal guardian and one of the strongest warriors alive. A key moment in her journey involves her decision to voluntarily defect to Kyosho, allowing herself to be captured and psychologically tortured by the manipulative Moutoku Sousou. She does this to shield Ryuubi from the destructive nature of her own awakening dragon power. While held captive, Kan'u demonstrates her superior strength by breaking free of her restraints, proving she remained of her own will, further highlighting the depth of her sacrifice for loyalty. She is eventually persuaded to leave Kyosho by Genjou Kakouton, who draws a parallel between her devotion to Ryuubi and his own feelings for Sousou. Later, she takes the difficult advice of Shiryuu Chou-un to stay away from Ryuubi, a painful decision made to allow her young leader to grow into her own strength and independence. Kan'u's key relationships are central to her character arc. Her bond with Ryuubi is the most significant, evolving from a simple guardian-oath to a complex connection with strong romantic undertones. She also shares a deep, fated rivalry with Shimei Ryomou, who is prophesied to be her killer, a destiny Kan'u confronts in battle. Her interactions with other powerful fighters, such as Hakufu Sonsaku, also serve to showcase her incredible abilities and her capacity for restraint.
As a fighter, Kan'u is a Special A-Rank toushi wielding overwhelmingly powerful chi energy. Her signature weapon is the Seiryutō, or Blue Dragon Crescent Blade, a legendary and nearly invincible glaive inherited from her predecessor Guan Yu. This weapon is said to be crafted from a jewel-like steel and possesses immense power. In combat, Kan'u has demonstrated incredible skill and resilience, once defeating an opponent using only her legs and one arm after suffering a broken arm herself. She has proven capable of overcoming an opponent in a demonic dragon state and standing toe-to-toe with other highly ranked fighters, cementing her status as one of the most formidable warriors in the series. Throughout her development, Kan'u transitions from a supremely confident, almost invincible warrior to a more grounded and emotionally vulnerable individual, yet she remains, without question, a fiercely loyal and unstoppable protector until the end.
