Description
Manhattan Cafe is a student at Tracen Academy and a supporting character in the anime Uma Musume: Pretty Derby - BNW no Chikai. She is a beautiful horse girl with long, jet-black hair that reaches her waist, a distinctive white forelock reminiscent of a blaze, and golden eyes. Her appearance can seem eerie or ghostlike, and she is often seen alone near walls, tracing patterns with her fingertips. This behavior stems from her unique ability to perceive and converse with spirits; she is never truly alone because she constantly keeps company with an invisible friend, a ghost that many other students describe as looking remarkably similar to Manhattan Cafe herself. This friend is widely believed to be the spirit of Sunday Silence, her real-life sire, and acts as both a guide and a sometimes unsettling presence. Despite her mysterious aura, Manhattan Cafe is earnest and dedicated, especially toward her trainer, toward whom she harbors a quiet but strong devotion. She speaks in a low, calm voice and tends to be reserved with strangers, but those who know her appreciate her sincerity. Her greatest motivation is simply to have fun participating in races, and she approaches competition with a genuine, uncomplicated joy. In BNW no Chikai, her role is that of a background figure among the many students at Tracen, but her distinctive abilities and personality set her apart. She has a fondness for coffee, which she drinks slowly, and she often blends her own original coffee beans. Her real-world counterpart was a champion long-distance racehorse, and in the anime world she excels at long-distance running, using a running style that relies on chasing the unseen friend from mid-pack to steadily increase speed and intimidate rivals. Over the course of her story, she learns to differentiate between the protective and the destructive aspects of her ghostly companion, ultimately choosing her own path rather than following a fate that would lead to injury and early retirement. Her development emphasizes self-determination and the strength found in the bonds she forms with those around her, both seen and unseen.
