Description
Donyell Toss is the captain of the space pirate battleship Megafauna in the series. He is a middle-aged man who serves as the commanding officer of the pirate crew, sharing responsibility with Cahill Saint for the planning and execution of the mission to seize a Photon Battery.
In terms of personality, Donyell is generally calm, collected, and thorough in his approach to command. He displays a paternal patience for the younger, often impulsive members of his crew but is not afraid to express his frustration. He is frequently seen getting annoyed by Aida Surugan's constant recklessness and has been known to scold her when she acts on her likes and dislikes on the battlefield. Despite his complaints, he consistently supports her and adapts to the unpredictable situations caused by the crew's behavior.
Donyell’s primary role throughout the story is as the steady hand on the bridge of the Megafauna. He is involved in major strategic decisions, such as the initial rescue operation for Aida. Following Cahill's death, Donyell returns to the Megafauna and takes a central role in its operations, including attempting to prevent Klim Nick from launching reckless attacks. He is later convinced by Bellri Zenam and Klim not to enact Cahill's plan to take over the Capital Tower, instead trusting Bellri to defend them in battle. As the conflict expands into space and then back to Earth, Donyell remains at the helm, navigating the three-way conflict between the Capital Army, the Dorette Fleet, and the Amerian Army.
His key relationships involve the main cast of the Megafauna. He treats Aida Surugan with a sense of duty, referring to her as Princess, but does not hesitate to correct her behavior. He provides guidance and support to Bellri Zenam, treating him as an adult and recognizing his potential as a pilot. He also shows a compassionate side, comforting Raraiya Monday when she becomes distressed and giving her a water orb containing a goldfish. He works closely with his bridge crew, including the Executive Officer and Steer, and relies on their support to issue accurate commands during combat. He shows respect for the abilities of Happa, the chief mechanic.
Throughout the narrative, Donyell undergoes a gradual shift in his position. While he begins as the definitive captain giving orders, his importance as a decision-maker lessens somewhat as Aida Surugan matures and becomes the de facto leader of the Megafauna unit. After the death of Commander Gusion Surugan, command of the fleet passes to Aida due to her political position, though Donyell continues to handle the practical field command. In a moment of vulnerability, he cries like a child while declaring that he will help Aida as much as he can, urging her to accept her duty.
Regarding notable abilities, Donyell is an experienced and competent ship captain. He demonstrates strong leadership and strategic thinking, effectively commanding the Megafauna in battle against multiple opposing forces. He is shown to be perceptive, being the first to guess and utilize Bellri's potential as a pilot. He is a support-oriented commander, known for making accurate decisions with the help of his crew. After the war, he joins the rest of the Pirate Corps on the Crescent Ship as it travels around the world.
