Description
Caster, whose true name is Alexandre Dumas, is a character from the novel series Fate/strange Fake, summoned in the False Holy Grail War in Snowfield, USA. Known also as the False Caster, his physical appearance is distinctive: he stands 182 centimeters tall, weighs 82 kilograms, and has light brown skin with a very short crop of blue hair. Despite being a novelist, he has an imposing physique inherited from his father, a general, though he personally detests manual labor. His typical attire includes a blue tailcoat with buttoned white lapels and a white cravat.
His identity is rooted in the historical French author, but within the context of the story, he is defined by a singular philosophy: he is not a hero himself, but rather the one who creates heroes. This distinction is central to his character. He has no personal wish for the Holy Grail and therefore no interest in obtaining it. Instead, his motivation is purely hedonistic; he desires to act as an observer, to enjoy good food, beautiful women, and to be entertained by the spectacle of the war. He is a flamboyant, boisterous, and unapologetically decadent individual, known for his love of wine, women, and tall tales. He often makes outrageously blatant lies, such as claiming to have slept with Cleopatra, simply for his own amusement. He dislikes being forced to work and frequently complains to his Master about his workload.
In the story, Caster serves a unique role as a supporting figure rather than a frontline combatant. His Master is Orlando Reeve, the sheriff of Snowfield. Reeve’s plan to win the Holy Grail War is to use Caster’s abilities to arm his squad of twenty-eight police officers, known as Clan Calatin, with powerful weapons, aiming to defeat Heroic Spirits with the power of ordinary humans. Caster spends most of the war in his underground workshop, observing the conflict, gathering information, and using his Noble Phantasm to create pseudo-Noble Phantasms for the officers. Key relationships include his pragmatic partnership with Orlando, who tolerates his eccentricities to achieve their shared goal. He takes a particular interest in John Wingard, a member of Clan Calatin who lost an arm, seeing potential in him to become a hero. He also forms a temporary alliance with the Master and Servant pair of Flat Escardos and Jack the Ripper, finding them amusing and useful in a battle against the powerful True Archer.
His character development is subtle, as he begins as a passive spectator but is eventually compelled to take direct action. Despite his claims of non-involvement, he secretly leaves his workshop to assist John Wingard in battle, using his abilities to turn the tide. This action demonstrates that while he presents himself as a mere observer, he is invested in the narrative he is helping to write and is willing to take risks to see a good story unfold. He develops a respect for his Master’s resolve when Orlando decides to fight to the end to protect his city, prompting Caster to offer his personal services, including cooking for the entire police force.
Caster’s notable abilities are what make him a formidable force despite his lack of direct combat skills. His parameters are unremarkable except for his EX-ranked Magic and A-ranked Luck. His class skill, Territory Creation, is an extremely low E rank because he was not a magus in life. However, his true power lies in his unique version of Item Creation, which has been modified to EX rank by his Noble Phantasm, Gran Dictionnaire de Cuisine. This ability allows him to revise the history and legend of existing objects, thereby raising their rank and turning them into pseudo-Noble Phantasms. He cannot alter relics that are already A rank or above, as their legends are considered complete. His primary support Noble Phantasm is Musketeers' Masquerade. This anti-unit Noble Phantasm allows him to rewrite the target's life by incorporating his own experiences or creations, boosting their power several times over. It is a support ability meant for those facing immense power and typically only works on ordinary humans. These abilities, centered on creation and augmentation, allow him to fulfill his role as the maker of heroes, proving that a great writer can be just as influential in a war of legends as any warrior.
