Description
Kaito Kid is the master thief known as the Phantom Thief, whose real identity is Kaito Kuroba, a seventeen-year-old high school student. The character appearing in the world of Detective Conan is the second person to bear the title. The original Kaito Kid was Kaito's father, Toichi Kuroba, a world-renowned magician who died in what was reported as a stage accident approximately eight years before the main events of the story. Kaito discovered a hidden room in his house containing his father's thief equipment, learning that his father had been murdered. To find the people responsible and complete his father's unfinished mission, Kaito took on the white costume and persona to become the new Kaito Kid.
In his daily life, Kaito is an ordinary high school student known for being a playful prankster who loves performing magic tricks. However, when he transforms into Kaito Kid, he adopts a dramatic, charming, and supremely confident personality. He is infamous for his overconfident, almost arrogant attitude, always preferring to create a spectacular spectacle around his heists. He delights in leading the police on wild goose chases, allowing them to come within moments of catching him before escaping in a dazzling display of skill. Despite his reputation as a criminal, he has a strong sense of honor. He hates to see anyone get hurt and will readily abandon a theft to rescue someone in danger. He is a charmer who always knows what to say to disarm his audience, yet he also has a whimsical side, such as a notable fear of fish. He also shows a soft spot for his fans, once refusing to perform a heist when police tried to bar the general public from watching him.
The primary driving motivation for Kaito as Kaito Kid is to locate the legendary jewel known as Pandora. This mythical gem is said to shed a tear of immortality when a specific comet passes. Kaito's ultimate goal is to find and destroy this jewel to prevent a dangerous organization from using it. This organization is the same one that murdered his father when he refused to help them in their search. While he is known for stealing many beautiful gems and artworks, he routinely returns them, as he is only interested in finding Pandora and using his heists as a challenge to test his skills.
In the context of the story, Kaito Kid serves as a unique and elusive rival for the protagonist, Conan Edogawa. Their relationship is complex, alternating between intense rivalry and reluctant alliance. Conan is one of the few individuals capable of challenging Kid's tactics and deducing his tricks, earning Kid's deep respect. Conversely, Kid is one of the few people who knows Conan's true identity as the detective Shinichi Kudo. Though they are often on opposite sides, they have occasionally set aside their differences to work together against a common enemy or solve a murder, forming a powerful and clever duo. A persistent thorn in his side is Inspector Ginzo Nakamori, the police officer sworn to capture him. The inspector is frequently outsmarted by Kid, but his relentless pursuit is a significant part of Kid's life. Adding a layer of personal complication, the inspector is the father of Aoko Nakamori, Kaito's childhood friend and classmate. Aoko despises Kaito Kid for always causing trouble for her father, completely unaware that the phantom thief is actually her mischievous friend, Kaito, for whom she has growing feelings.
Kaito's skills and abilities are extraordinary and central to his character. He is a genius-level intellect with estimated IQ of 400 and masterful powers of deduction that allow him to match wits with top detectives. His true expertise lies in magic, illusion, and prestidigitation, skills inherited from his father and which he uses to execute his impossible-seeming thefts. He is a master of disguise, able to seamlessly impersonate any person, including voice mimicry, without any mechanical aid. He is also a skilled escape artist. Kaito relies on a signature set of gadgets to perform his heists. These include a playing card gun that fires sharpened cards capable of cutting metal, a hang glider concealed within his white cape for aerial escapes, a utility belt with tools such as smoke bombs and flash grenades, and lock-picking devices. His abilities are so refined that he is often called the Magician Under the Moonlight, a testament to his theatrical and seemingly supernatural talent for thievery.
