Description
Katsuragi Kamui, as he appears in Cardfight!! Vanguard G NEXT, is a character with a long history within the series, having started his journey as a young prodigy and grown into a mentor for the next generation. By the time of G NEXT, he is a first-year high school student who works part-time at the Card Capital 2 shop, a location that serves as a central hub for many of the series' events. His background as one of the original members of Team Q4, the protagonists from earlier story arcs, establishes him as an experienced and highly skilled fighter, which is a crucial aspect of his role in the newer narrative.

Kamui’s personality remains vibrant and full of energy, though his experiences have tempered him into a responsible, if still excitable, young man. He is characterized by a loud, boastful, and sometimes bratty demeanor, but this is consistently backed up by genuine skill and a deep passion for the game of Vanguard. He hates being underestimated because of his age or size and is always eager to prove himself against any opponent he deems worthy. A long-running source of comedic relief is his unrequited crush on Emi Sendou, the sister of his old friend Aichi, which he has maintained throughout the series. He also has a tendency to mispronounce complex words or phrases, often becoming embarrassed when his mistakes are pointed out.

Kamui’s primary motivation stems from his unwavering love for the game and his desire to become stronger. He holds a strong sense of justice and can be distrustful of those who use Vanguard for malicious purposes. In G NEXT, his motivations also include fostering the skills of new fighters. He takes a particular interest in the protagonist, Chrono Shindou, after seeing his potential and his unique Gear Chronicle deck. Acting as a mentor, he is the one who teaches Chrono the basic rules of the game and helps him understand the structure of the Fighter's Association, even going so far as to abandon his part-time duties to assist him with quests, much to the dismay of his boss.

His role in the story is that of a supporting character and a bridge between the older generation of fighters and the new one. He is a familiar face who provides continuity for long-time viewers and a knowledgeable guide for the new protagonists. He is instrumental in introducing Chrono to the world of organized Vanguard and helps facilitate the formation of Chrono's own team by encouraging him to work with his new friends, Shion Kiba and Tokoha Anjo. Through his job at Card Capital 2, he is a constant presence, offering advice, issuing challenges, and reacting to the events unfolding around the new team.

Kamui has several key relationships that define his character. His most significant relationship in this era is with Chrono Shindou, whom he respects as a rival and protégé. He also works under Shin Nitta, the manager of Card Capital 2, and his old teammate, Misaki Tokura, is the owner of the Card Capital franchise. While his old Team Q4 members like Aichi Sendou and Toshiki Kai are not the focus of this series, Kamui's history with them colors his perspective and his dedication to the game. His two friends and self-proclaimed followers, Reiji Uno and Eiji Saga, often accompany him, with their characteristic routine of Reiji making a comment and Eiji abbreviating it.

Kamui's development from his first appearance to G NEXT is significant. He began as a brash, self-centered elementary schooler who once defeated Aichi, and has matured into a more team-oriented and responsible high schooler who takes on a mentor role. He has gained experience through numerous tournaments and battles against powerful opponents, including arcs where he faced the corrupting influence of the "Link Joker" and was able to have his memories of his friend Aichi restored and lost again. This history gives him a depth of experience that newcomers lack. As a fighter, his notable abilities are his raw, aggressive playstyle and his mastery of the Nova Grappler clan, which focuses on standing (re-activating) units multiple times in a single turn to create relentless, brute-force attacks. He is known for his "extreme break" and powerful rush tactics. A point of pride for him is that he is one of the few characters, and the only member of his original team, to have never switched to a different clan, remaining faithful to Nova Grapplers due to a promise made in his childhood.
