Description
Akira Too'oka is a Shikabane Hime, a living corpse bound by contract to serve the Kōgon Sect in partnership with the monk Sadahiro Mibu. Her existence as a Shikabane Hime began with her death during an attack by a restless corpse known as a Shikabane. Her entire family was killed by Shikabanes, and she sought out Sadahiro to euthanize her transformed loved ones, but was fatally wounded by one of them during that mission. For unexplained reasons, she was revived as a Shikabane Hime instead of passing away permanently. Her physical appearance includes dark green hair, sometimes noted as violet, and brown eyes, often accessorized with a light purple headband. Akira operates as part of a clandestine unit within the Kōgon Sect. Her duties extend beyond eliminating rogue Shikabanes to include a grimmer responsibility: the termination of other Shikabane Himes who have lost their contracted monks and risk turning feral. This unit uniquely holds sect authorization to kill living humans, a prohibition strictly enforced for all other members. Her personality is typically cynical and controlled, a demeanor she displays while working alongside Sadahiro and Ouri Kagami at Cafe Parthenon as part of their daily cover life. She maintains strict discipline over Sadahiro, often physically striking him to prevent him from divulging secrets or making inappropriate comments. Like all Shikabane Himes, her primary motivation is tied to the Kōgon Sect’s promise of salvation: eliminating 108 rogue Shikabanes, a number corresponding to Buddhist earthly sins, will grant her entry to heaven. Another Shikabane Hime, Kohaku Hoshimura, notes that Akira displays an unusual level of commitment to achieving this salvation compared to others who often treat it as a secondary goal. This doctrine is later exposed as false; instead of ascending to heaven, a Shikabane Hime who completes the task transforms into an indestructible destroyer entity. The sect then secretly confines these beings within coffins while informing their monks that salvation has been attained. Akira’s ultimate fate upon potentially completing her quota remains undisclosed. In combat, she notably employs firearms, a less common choice among Shikabane Himes. Her contracted monk, Sadahiro, enhances her marksmanship by using his Zadan technique to imbue her shots with spiritual energy. Her existence as a Shikabane Hime is bound to Sadahiro through a mystical catalyst. While the destruction of this catalyst would normally sever the connection between a monk and their Hime, the Shikabane Hime’s own willpower can sustain the bond regardless.
