Description
Nyanko, whose true name is Madara, is a powerful yokai and one of the main characters of Natsume's Book of Friends. He is a high-ranking flying white wolf yokai who ordinarily takes the form of a round, overweight maneki-neko, or lucky cat, which is why Natsume nicknames him Nyanko-sensei. He was sealed in a shrine for many years until Natsume accidentally freed him, and because he spent so long trapped in a material form, he continues to use the cat shape in daily life. In this form he is visible to ordinary humans, which allows him to live openly with Natsume and his guardians.
In terms of personality, Nyanko is prideful, arrogant, loud, and quick-tempered. He often speaks down to lesser yokai and complains constantly about Natsume's kindhearted and forgiving nature. He is also indulgent, frequently overeating snacks such as manju, shrimp, and squid, and drinking sake until he is drunk. Despite his small and comical appearance, he is an exceptionally powerful spirit, and when he reveals his true form, most other yokai are intimidated or flee outright. He often claims he is not a cat, yet he enjoys playing with cat toys, and he frequently bickers with Natsume in a way that leads to comedic physical confrontations.
His motivations begin as entirely self-interested. When he meets Natsume, he wants to claim the Book of Friends, the collection of names left by Natsume's grandmother Reiko. He makes a deal to serve as Natsume's bodyguard until Natsume dies, at which point he will inherit the book. Although he continues to grumble about wanting to eat Natsume or take the book, he never acts on those threats and instead protects Natsume from malicious spirits and dangerous exorcists. As the story progresses, it becomes clear that his attachment to Natsume is genuine, though he works hard to deny it.
