Description
Nijūichiemon Tsuzureya is the protagonist of the anime film Nijūichiemon: Uchū e Irasshai! and the subsequent television series. He is a young boy who lives in a futuristic version of Tokyo during the 21st century, where interstellar travel and alien tourism are common. He is the 21st generation heir to the Tsuzureya, a long-established traditional Japanese inn that has been operating since the Edo period. The hotel is struggling financially, overshadowed by the much larger and more luxurious Galaxy Hotel that stands next door.

In terms of background, Nijūichiemon was born into this family business and is expected to eventually take over as the 21st owner. His father, Nijūemon, is the current proprietor and is deeply committed to preserving the family legacy. His mother is a supportive presence in the household. Despite being the designated heir, Nijūichiemon has little interest in running the inn. Instead, he harbors a powerful dream of becoming a space pilot and exploring the universe. He works as a bellboy at the hotel, not out of passion for the work, but to save up tips and one day earn enough money to buy his own rocket.

His personality is defined by a strong sense of adventure and an almost reckless curiosity about the cosmos. He is optimistic and determined, often diving headfirst into new situations without fully considering the risks. At the same time, he is kind-hearted and cares deeply about his family, even as he resists the future they envision for him. This creates an internal conflict between his personal aspirations and his sense of duty to his family. He is not lazy or selfish by nature; rather, his motivation is driven by a genuine and unwavering fascination with space travel. He is shown to be resourceful and brave when faced with challenges, and he possesses a resilient spirit that helps him overcome obstacles.

His primary motivation throughout the story is to fulfill his dream of traveling through space. This goal leads him to accept an invitation to test a new rocket, which sets the main plot in motion. The invitation, however, is secretly a scheme by the owner of the rival Galaxy Hotel and his daughter Luna, who hope that if Nijūichiemon becomes a space pilot, it will be easier to buy out the struggling Tsuzureya. Nijūichiemon remains unaware of this ulterior motive and embarks on his journey with excitement.

His role in the story is that of the central character through whose eyes the audience experiences the adventure. He serves as the link between the familiar, down-to-earth world of the failing family inn and the vast, strange universe of alien cultures and cosmic wonders. He is the decision-maker and the heart of the group, often pushing the narrative forward through his choices and actions.

Key relationships shape his journey. His bond with Mongar, a small, round alien creature from the Tamba star system, is one of close friendship. Mongar possesses extraordinary abilities, including near-indestructibility and the power to teleport people and objects over distances of up to three kilometers. Mongar becomes a loyal companion and a crucial asset in many situations. Another important relationship is with Gonsuke, a potato-digging robot who works as a bellboy at the Tsuzureya. Gonsuke is practical, money-minded, and obsessed with potatoes, often providing comic relief. Despite his grumbling nature, he accompanies Nijūichiemon on his space adventure and contributes in unexpected ways. The relationship with Luna, the daughter of the rival hotel owner, is complex. She initially appears as part of a plot against his family, but as the story progresses, she becomes a friend and a key figure in his life, representing a connection to the responsibilities he left behind on Earth.

In terms of development, Nijūichiemon grows over the course of the story. He begins as a boy torn between his family's expectations and his own dreams. Through his adventures in space, he gains firsthand experience of the universe he so longs to explore, but he also learns about the value of home, family, and the people who care for him. By the end, he manages to reconcile his two desires, finding a way to pursue his dream of space while also supporting his family's hotel.

Regarding notable abilities, Nijūichiemon does not possess superhuman powers or advanced technology of his own. His strengths lie in his courage, quick thinking, and unwavering determination. He is a capable pilot and navigator when given the chance, and he demonstrates an ability to adapt to new and dangerous environments. He is also shown to be persuasive and able to inspire loyalty in his companions. His greatest ability is perhaps his hopeful and adventurous spirit, which allows him to face the unknown without fear.
