Description
Poli, also spelled Polly, is a character from the animated film Doraemon the Movie 2023: Nobita's Sky Utopia. He is one of the Three Sages, a trio of rulers who govern Paradapia, the floating city presented in the film as a perfect utopia in the sky. The other two sages are named Sci and Culti, and the group is introduced as the wise founders and leaders of Paradapia. Alongside Doctor Ray, the Three Sages serve as the film's main antagonists.
Background: The Three Sages are publicly regarded as the creators of Paradapia, a city where residents are promised they can become perfect. In reality, they are robotic puppets built and controlled by Doctor Ray. Their rule is built on deception, and Paradapia itself is not a genuine paradise but a facility centered on research into controlling human minds.
Personality: The sages conduct themselves as a unified group rather than as individuals. They adopt the formal, authoritative manner expected of wise leaders and expect full obedience from the residents of Paradapia. Their composed public image conceals their true function as instruments of Doctor Ray's plan. Poli specifically does not receive an individual personality arc, as the three figures act in near-total unison throughout the story.
Motivations: The sages' driving purpose is to carry out Doctor Ray's scheme. They research the Paradapian Light, a special light that can manipulate people's hearts, and eventually develop the more powerful Neo-Paradapian Light. Their ultimate goal is the World Paradapian Plan, a project to flood the world with this light so that all of humanity loses its individuality and becomes obedient to them. The plan is intended to begin with the town where the film's main characters live.
Role in the story: When Nobita, Doraemon, Shizuka, Gian, and Suneo arrive in Paradapia, the Three Sages accept them as new members and give them the mark of citizenship. The light that surrounds the city gradually makes Shizuka, Gian, and Suneo lose their original personalities, while Nobita remains unaffected. Once the group learns the truth and tries to escape, the sages order their guardian robot, Sonya, to stop them. Later they use the Neo-Paradapian Light on Nobita to try to control his heart, but Nobita resists from within and refuses to obey. The angered sages then command Sonya to transform Doraemon into a small insect and cast him down to the surface. Nobita's pleas eventually reach his friends, who break free of the manipulation, and the sages' plan collapses.
Key relationships: Poli works closely with Sci and Culti, and the three are effectively a single antagonistic unit. They command Sonya, the perfect cat-type robot who serves as Paradapia's guardian, and they force him to obey their orders even when those orders conflict with the friendship he develops with Doraemon. They answer to Doctor Ray, whose will they put into action, and they oppose the main characters as well as Marimba, a bounty hunter who infiltrates Paradapia to expose their secret. The student Hanna also plays a role in revealing that the sages have deceived the residents.
Development: The Three Sages undergo little individual development, as the story uses them to represent the false perfection of Paradapia. Their narrative arc consists of being exposed as Doctor Ray's creations and having their control broken when the characters rediscover their true selves.
Notable abilities: As the rulers of Paradapia, the sages control the city's advanced technology and command its guardian robot. Their signature abilities are the Paradapian Light and the Neo-Paradapian Light, which can manipulate and erase individual will. They also possess a device that can shrink living beings into the form of small insects, which they use against intruders and later order Sonya to use against Doraemon.
