Description
Dik Dik Van Dik is a character from the anime Ultimate Muscle, known in the original Japanese version as Gazelleman. He is a Seigi Chojin, or Justice Chojin, a heroic superhuman wrestler. His homeland is Tanzania, and he has the appearance of an anthropomorphic gazelle, being of the half-beast, half-human variety of Chojin.
Despite being the top-ranked graduate of his class at the prestigious Hercules Factory wrestling academy, celebrated for his combat skills and handsome features, Dik Dik Van Dik holds a paradoxical record. He is known for losing nearly every match in which he participates. This consistent failure often serves a narrative purpose, demonstrating the formidable strength of new villains or providing a source of comic relief. His reputation as a lovable loser is a central and frequently mentioned aspect of his character, and his few victories, such as a rare tag-team win against the Poison Six Pack, are treated as major emotional events.
In terms of personality, Dik Dik Van Dik thinks of himself as a charismatic "pretty boy" who should be popular with fans. This self-perception is routinely undercut by reality, as crowds often overlook or even trample him in their enthusiasm for other wrestlers. Despite his bravado and tendency to make excuses for his losses, such as claiming to use "reverse psychology" on his opponents, he is fundamentally a loyal and supportive friend. He maintains a strict vegetarian diet, which is consistent with his gazelle heritage.
His role in the story is primarily that of a supportive bystander and comedic sidekick. Originally assigned to protect Tokyo alongside the protagonist, Mantarou Kinniku (known as Kid Muscle), he often acts as a commentator during matches, helps sell merchandise, and provides encouragement from the sidelines. Although his duties initially included monitoring Mantarou, their relationship develops into one of camaraderie and rivalry, with Dik Dik frequently expressing frustration at the protagonist's lazy and gross habits while still cheering him on.
Dik Dik Van Dik shares key relationships with his fellow teammates in the Muscle League, also known as Team AHO. He is particularly close to the anthropomorphic walrus wrestler Seiuchin (Wally Tuskett), with whom he forms a tag team and often shares in defeat and comedic mishaps. He also frequently appears alongside the American wrestler Terry the Kid (Terry Kenyon). Together, this trio forms the core group of friends supporting the main hero.
In terms of development, Dik Dik Van Dik's character arc is one of gradual acceptance of his role. He begins as a confident and high-ranking graduate but experiences a steady erosion of his status due to repeated defeats. He shifts from a potential frontline fighter to a figure largely defined by his losses, yet his resilience and unwavering loyalty to his friends prevent him from becoming a tragic figure. His comedic role intensifies over time, with story arcs featuring him failing in preliminary contests like a "Rock, Paper, Scissors" competition due to his own curiosity, or comically attempting to fill in for injured wrestlers. Despite his poor record, he consistently shows up to support his allies, participating in training regimens to help them prepare for major battles, even if he often faints from the exertion himself.
Dik Dik Van Dik possesses several notable abilities. His signature technique is the Antler Fist, where he equips a glove with sharp antlers to deliver a powerful leaping punch. His most powerful move, first seen in the manga, is the Savannah Heat, a spinning attack that can slice an opponent into three parts. He has a listed Chojin Power level of 1,000,000, stands approximately 205 cm (about 6 feet 7 inches) tall, and weighs 136 kg (about 302 lbs).
