Description
Chatarō Fukuwake is a supporting character in the anime Ayaka: A Story of Bonds and Wounds. He is a teenager with brown eyes and short brown hair that reaches his ears, and he is easily identified by his glasses, which he always wears. His typical attire consists of a hakama and haori, the traditional clothing of a shrine disciple. As a young disciple serving at the Kasen Shrine on the mystical Ayakashima islands, Chatarō is training under the shrine's head priest, Haruaki Kurama.
In terms of personality, Chatarō is known for being cheerful and energetic, often acting as a mood maker among his peers. He is physically active and enjoys exercising, though this athletic inclination is contrasted by a notable lack of enthusiasm for academic study. He appears to be a dedicated and reliable individual, taking his responsibilities at the shrine seriously as he learns to become a Ley Master, a role that involves maintaining the spiritual balance of the islands by pacifying dangerous spirits known as Ara-Mitama.
One of the most significant drivers for Chatarō is his competitive relationship with Yako Amano, his fellow disciple. The two have been close since childhood, and Chatarō views Yako as his rival. He is highly motivated by a desire not to lose to Yako, and their rivalry is a point of pride for him; a primary point of contention between them is the question of who deserves the title of first disciple of Haruaki Kurama.
Within the story's narrative, Chatarō and Yako serve as the younger generation of shrine keepers. Their master, Haruaki Kurama, is one of three former disciples of Yukito Yanagi's late father. As such, Chatarō's role is to assist in the shrine's duties of protecting Ayakashima's peace and harmony, often by confronting and pacifying rogue Mitama spirits. While the central conflict involves a deep discord between the older disciples Haruaki Kurama and Aka Ibuki, Chatarō's position is firmly alongside his master, learning and upholding the traditional methods of spirit pacification.
As a Ley Master in training, Chatarō is developing notable magical abilities. His training under Haruaki Kurama focuses on the use of fire and wind magic, which are the primary tools used to pacify and subdue dangerous Ara-Mitama spirits. He is shown participating in missions to protect other young Ley Masters and is guided by Haruaki, who frequently coaches him and Yako on how to work together effectively as a team during their encounters with these spiritual threats.
