Description
Captain Juzo Okita is the commanding officer of the spaceship Yamato and a figure of central importance to its voyage. A veteran soldier of the Earth Defense Force, he is a native of Fukushima Prefecture and holds the rank of Vice Admiral. Beyond his military career, Okita is also an accomplished expert in astrophysics, possessing a deep and genuine scientific curiosity about space, which he once wished to explore as a researcher rather than a soldier. This combination of disciplined military leadership and scientific insight defines his character.

In terms of personality, Okita presents a calm and stern exterior, but this composure conceals a formidable fighting spirit and an unyielding devotion to his mission to save a radiation-blasted Earth from the Gamilas threat. He is a man of patience and strategic foresight, believing that one must endure the humiliations of the present for the sake of a future victory. His leadership style is characterized by a willingness to take calculated, often reckless gambles, such as his famous order to charge directly through an enemy fleet, a strategy that becomes known as the Okita method of frontal assault. Despite his grim duty, he deeply cares for his crew, acting as a father figure to them, particularly to the hot-headed young officer Susumu Kodai.

Okita’s primary motivation is the survival of the human race, a goal he pursues even as he himself is dying. He is suffering from a terminal illness, a result of radiation exposure from the initial Gamilas attacks, and his health visibly deteriorates throughout the first journey of the Yamato. Nevertheless, he remains relentlessly focused on reaching the planet Iscandar to obtain a device that can cleanse Earth's poisoned atmosphere. His role in the story is that of the visionary leader and moral center of the Yamato. Even when bedridden by his sickness, he continues to advise the crew and devise winning strategies from his captain's quarters, passing the role of acting captain to Susumu Kodai during the final battles. His journey is ultimately a race against time to save his world before he succumbs to his illness.

Okita's key relationships are central to his character development. He regards Susumu Kodai almost as a surrogate son, filling the void left by his own son, who was killed in an early battle with the Gamilas. This tragedy, along with the death of Kodai's own brother, Mamoru, in the same engagement, creates a deep, unspoken bond between the two men. Okita often provides Kodai with guidance and comfort, seeing in him a future leader. He also shares a close, more informal friendship with the ship's physician, Doctor Sakezo Sado, who is one of the few initially aware of his fatal condition. His adversary, the Gamilas leader General Domel, regards him with great respect as a worthy opponent.

Okita undergoes significant development, primarily through his sacrifice and eventual legacy. He famously dies just as the Yamato returns in triumph to a recovering Earth, peacefully passing away while gazing at the blue planet he saved. However, his story does not end there. In the film Final Yamato, he is dramatically revived from a state of cryogenic suspension after scientists find a cure for his illness, allowing him to lead the Earth forces once more against a new alien menace, the Dingirians. His final, ultimate act is to sacrifice himself by detonating the Yamato to save the Earth from a planetary flood, a decision he hides from his crew to spare them the burden. As a leader, his presence is so monumental that after his death, the Yamato crew leaves the captain's position vacant in his honor for an extended period.

As for notable abilities, Okita is not a physical combatant but a master tactician and strategist, often turning impossible odds into victory through sheer will and ingenuity. His most famous ability is his unshakeable willpower, which inspires absolute loyalty from his crew. His knowledge of astrophysics allows him to use cosmic phenomena, such as stellar radiation and planetary conditions, to his tactical advantage in battles. His famous response to a Gamilas demand for surrender, a simple and defiant word, has become an iconic example of his unbreakable resolve in the face of annihilation.
