Description
Mamoru Kodai is an officer in the United Nations Cosmo Navy and the older brother of the series' protagonist, Susumu Kodai. Before the events of the main story, he serves as a weapons officer aboard the battleship Kirishima under Admiral Juzo Okita, later earning his own command of the destroyer Yukikaze. His family is killed by planet bombs launched by the alien Garmillas Empire, leaving Susumu as his only surviving relative. Before his own departure for a critical battle, Mamoru gives Susumu a harmonica that belonged to their father, a memento that becomes significant to his younger brother.

In personality, Mamoru Kodai is depicted as a natural and courageous leader who is comfortable with command and willing to bear its burdens at a relatively young age. He possesses a strong sense of duty and an almost fatalistic bravery, believing that a man should fight on even to the death rather than retreat for the sake of a future he might not see. This contrasts with the more strategic thinking of Admiral Okita, who believes in enduring temporary humiliation for the sake of a greater victory. Despite his stern military demeanor, he has a thoughtful and even poetic side, evidenced by his appreciation for the works of the poet Chuya Nakahara.

His primary motivation throughout his final mission is the protection of Earth and the hope for its future. He is driven by a deep sense of responsibility, not only as an officer but also as an older brother. The tragic loss of his family steels his resolve, but his experiences after being captured lead him to an even greater conviction: the belief that understanding and peace with the enemy, the Garmillas, is truly possible.

In the story, Mamoru commands the Yukikaze during the disastrous First Battle of Pluto. When Admiral Okita orders a retreat, Mamoru disobeys, sacrificing his ship and crew so that the more valuable admiral and his battleship can escape. He is presumed dead, but in truth, he is captured by Garmillan forces. The prison transport ship he is on later crashes on the planet Iscandar, where he is the sole survivor and is found by Queen Stasha. The queen nurses him back to health, and over the following months, they develop a deep romantic bond, and she conceives his daughter, Sasha. As his health fails, Mamoru records a holographic message for the crew of the Yamato, which is on its way to Iscandar, entrusting a personal plea to his brother Susumu to live fully for both of them on a restored Earth. After his death, his consciousness is preserved by Iscandarian technology and becomes the core of the Cosmo Reverse System, the very device meant to restore Earth.

Key relationships define his character. His bond with his younger brother, Susumu, is central; Mamoru is a figure of inspiration and idealism that profoundly influences Susumu's own development as an officer. His friendship with the science officer Shiro Sanada, dating back to their academy days, is a constant throughout his life, with Sanada being one of the few who truly understands Mamoru's fate. He also has a past romantic relationship with Kaoru Niimi, Sanada's assistant, which ends amicably on the eve of his final mission. His relationship with Queen Stasha of Iscandar is one of mutual healing and love, as she finds a companion with whom she can be emotionally open, and he comes to learn the truth about the possibility of peace with the enemy.

Over the course of his arc, Mamoru develops from a promising young officer willing to make a suicidal last stand into a figure of transcendent hope. His physical death is not an end but a transformation, as his preserved consciousness becomes the heart of the device that can save Earth. In a final act of will, he self-activates the Cosmo Reverse System to save the life of Yuki Mori, his brother's beloved, dissipating his spirit in the process and completing his journey from warrior to guardian. His legacy, however, persists as an unseen influence, appearing in visions to his former crewmates and continuing to inspire his brother.

As an officer, Mamoru Kodai is noted for his competence. He is the first Earthling to fire a shock cannon in battle, demonstrating his skill as a weapons officer. He is a capable commander, able to motivate his crew even in the face of certain death. His most notable ability is not a physical one but his profound capacity for empathy and understanding, which allows him to see past the Garmillas as a simple enemy and recognize a shared path to peace. This ability, though, is intrinsically tied to his nature as a preserved consciousness, making him the essential component of the Cosmo Reverse System's power to restore a dying planet.
