Description
Emerging as the mascot for Gunma Prefecture's 38th National Athletic Festival in 1983, Gunma-chan began life as Yūma-chan, a running horse with a blue mane. The name blended "yūai" (representing disabled athletes) and "Gunma". Ownership rights later transferred to Gunma Prefecture, though initial exclusions of design modification rights resulted in two coexisting official versions. The original quadrupedal form persists at locations like Gunmaken Bajikoen and Dodaira-gawa Dam.

The current bipedal design, created by prefectural employee Fumiko Nakajima, debuted at the 3rd National Sports Tournament for Intellectually Disabled Athletes in 1994. This version depicts an orange, white, and brown pony wearing a green suit, red bowtie, and green hat, featuring variations like a "girl" version with a ribbon. Renamed Gunma-chan in 2008, it became the promotional face for Gunma Prefecture, operating from the Gunma Sogo Joho Center (Gunma-chan's House) in Tokyo. Prefectural investment surged after its 2014 Yuru-Chara Grand Prix win, exceeding 329 million yen in 2021.

Gunma-chan's profile lists a February 22 birthday, an eternally fixed age of seven human years, and no defined sex. Possessing a mystical healing ability, it enjoys hot springs, local Gunma cuisine, and activities that spread smiles. Preferred attire includes overalls, hot spring yukata, and kamishimo. As Director General of Gunma Prefecture Promotion, its role highlights regional attractions like hot springs, Mount Tanigawa, the UNESCO-listed Tomioka Silk Mill, and local dishes such as yakimanjuu. It conducts nationwide and international outreach, including an appearance at Anime Expo 2023 in Los Angeles.

In the anime series set in "hiragana Gunma," Gunma-chan navigates a world of peculiar inhabitants, using its healing power to resolve conflicts and spread joy. The storyline introduces family: a twin sister named Yuumi, parents, and an uncle. Interactions extend to friends Aoma and Mimi, tribes like the Haniwa (led by King Kofun-sama) and Ichigo (led by Princess Yayoi-hime), and characters including the rock band Nyas and fashion designer Kiryu-san. The anime's reference to Gunma-chan as "big brother" contradicted its official sex-neutral designation, causing local confusion.

Gunma-chan participates extensively in events. It won the 2014 Yuru-Chara Grand Prix with 1,002,505 votes after previous top-three placements. It hosts the annual Gotouchi Kyara Carnival, featuring 90 mascots like Kumamon and Hikonyan. Additional activities include concerts for the "Gekidan Gunma-chan" YouTube channel, high-five events, and collaborations such as themed trains on the Jomo Electric Railway (2020-2022) and a 2023 license plate release. Merchandise spans notebooks for Gunma Citizens Day, grilled noodle promotions, plush toys, and online stores.

Costume rentals for public events started in 2000 but ceased in 2020 after inconsistencies in performer behavior led to public complaints and legislative debate. The Gunma-chan Caravan Corps now coordinates official appearances using 18 prefecture-owned costumes, enforcing strict gesture guidelines to maintain character integrity.
