Description
Kurando Magira is a former agent of the covert investigative organization Under Anchor, a branch of the telecommunications corporation Anchor. He was originally assigned to be the human partner, or Buddy, for Phone Braver 5, one of the transforming cellphone robots developed by the company. That assignment never came to pass, as Phone Braver 5 was destroyed before Magira could fulfill that role. In the aftermath, he abandoned Under Anchor and was believed to have died, vanishing from the official record and becoming a mysterious, presumed-dead ex-agent.
In reality, Magira survived and reemerged as a hidden antagonist driving a larger conspiracy within the Anchor network. He operates in the shadows, collaborating with the renegade Phone Braver 01, also known as Zero-One, a rogue unit that has broken free of Anchor's control. Together, Magira and Zero-One orchestrate events that threaten the stability of the entire Phone Braver system. A central goal of Magira's scheme involves inducing what is called a Parallel Decentralized Link, a phenomenon tied to the Phone Bravers' networked abilities. To achieve this, he abducts the young protagonist Keita Amishima, the current Buddy of Phone Braver 7, and places both Keita and his robotic partner in a life-threatening trial that forces Keita to revisit critical locations from their shared history.
Magira's influence extends to corrupting other figures within Anchor. He works alongside Yuto Date, an advisor and later CEO of the company who helped develop the mechanical concept behind the Phone Bravers. Magira and Date jointly advance a project known as Gene, though Magira ultimately deceives Date, revealing a manipulative streak that places him in control of their partnership. He leverages his insider knowledge of Under Anchor's technology, personnel, and the Phone Bravers' dependencies to stay ahead of the organization that once employed him.
Because Magira is introduced as a former agent believed dead, his true motivations remain opaque for much of the narrative. His actions suggest a deep-seated resentment or a personal agenda tied to the destruction of Phone Braver 5 and his own severed connection to the organization. He operates as a calculating and elusive figure who uses Zero-One as both an ally and a tool, while testing Keita's bond with his Phone Braver in ways that hint at a larger, unresolved philosophy about the relationship between humans and sentient machines. Through these maneuvers, Magira serves as the catalyst for the climactic conflicts that force Anchor to confront corruption from within and challenge the heroes' understanding of loyalty and identity.
